Zhouzhuang Ancient Town is located in Kunshan City, Suzhou City, Jiangsu Province. It is one of the six major ancient towns in Jiangnan and a national 5A-level tourist attraction, enjoying the reputation of "China's No. 1 Water Town." The ancient town is surrounded by water on all sides, and the rivers within the town are distributed in a "well" shape. It has preserved 14 ancient bridges with distinctive features, among which Fu'an Bridge and Zhenfeng Bridge, first built during the Zhizheng period of the Yuan Dynasty, are the most famous. Zhouzhuang Ancient Town covers a total area of about 38.96 square kilometers, with the core scenic area covering about 0.47 square kilometers. It still retains the architectural style of the Ming and Qing dynasties. The town has nearly a hundred classical residences and more than 60 brick-carved gate towers, reflecting the typical layout of Jiangnan water towns with "small bridges, flowing water, and households." It is an outstanding representative of Jiangnan water town culture.
Historical Culture
The history of Zhouzhuang Ancient Town can be traced back to the Spring and Autumn period, when it was the fiefdom of Yao, the youngest son of the King of Wu, and was called "Zhenfeng Li." In the first year of Yuanyou in the Northern Song Dynasty (1086), Zhou Digonglang established a manor here. Because the Zhou family lived in clusters, it gradually became known as "Zhouzhuang."
During the Yuan Dynasty, Zhouzhuang began to rise commercially because it was located on an important water transport route, and a market began to take shape. In the Ming Dynasty, Zhouzhuang became an important distribution center for grain and silk in Jiangnan, and its economy became increasingly prosperous. Many wealthy merchants built residences here, forming the basic layout of the ancient town. In the Qing Dynasty, the commerce and handicraft industry of Zhouzhuang further developed. Relying on its superior waterway transportation, it became an important node connecting Shanghai, Suzhou, and Hangzhou. The town had many shops and gathered merchants.
Zhouzhuang Ancient Town was not only an important commercial town but also a place of cultural prosperity. Historically, many literati and scholars emerged here. For example, Shen Wansan, a wealthy man from Jiangnan in the Ming Dynasty, once lived here, and related legends are still circulating among the people today. The buildings, bridges, streets, and alleys in the ancient town all carry rich historical information. In 2003, Zhouzhuang was rated as a Chinese Historical and Cultural Town. Its unique water town culture and architectural style have become important physical materials for studying the history, folk customs, and architecture of the Jiangnan region.

In particular, the beams and square timbers of the main hall "Songmao Hall" are carved with exquisite patterns, demonstrating the superb craftsmanship of Jiangnan residential architecture. Zhang Hall covers a total area of about 1,800 square meters, with 6 rows front and back and more than 60 rooms. Its feature is that "sedan chairs enter through the front gate, and boats pass through the house." A small river runs through the courtyard, commonly known as "one river, two banks," reflecting the close integration of Jiangnan water town residences with water. The furnishings in the hall maintain the Ming Dynasty style, and the wood carvings, brick carvings, and other decorations are exquisite, showing the architectural characteristics of Ming Dynasty residences.

The Double Bridge consists of Shide Bridge and Yong'an Bridge. It is located in the center of Zhouzhuang Ancient Town and was first built during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty (1573-1620).
