History and Culture

In 1876, Li Hongzhang appointed Tang Tingshu to survey coal and iron mining in Kaiping Town, beginning Tangshan's modern industrial history. In 1878, Kaiping Coal Mine first opened the Tangshan Mine. After that, China's first self-run railway company, first mechanized cement factory, and others were established. Tangshan Mine developed from mechanized coal mining to fully mechanized coal mining. After the 1976 earthquake, it quickly resumed production. In 2008, Kailuan National Mine Park was completed and opened to the public in 2009.

Long-term mining by Kailuan created 26 square kilometers of mining-affected areas. Subsidence worsened after the earthquake, and the area was once used as a dumping ground for rubble. Since the 1990s, Tangshan has launched treatment of the southern coal mining subsidence area. From 2008 to 2012, it restored the ecological environment of 30 square kilometers in Nanhu, built more than 130 scenic spots, and created 19.5 square kilometers of green area, forming the world's largest urban central ecological park. From 2013 to 2017, construction for the International Horticultural Exposition was completed, receiving 5.21 million visitors in total.

In 2021, Nanhu and Kailuan Mine Park were integrated to create a national 5A-level scenic area, and it was officially approved in 2024.
