Main Attractions
Ice Cave Group
The Yunqiu Mountain Ice Cave Group is one of the world's three major ice cave wonders. It was formed about 3 million years ago during the Quaternary Ice Age and consists of 11 ice caves with a total area of about 11,000 square meters. The main ice cave is about 100 meters long, and the temperature inside remains between -5°C and -10°C year-round. It is filled with ice bamboo shoots, ice pillars, ice waterfalls, ice flowers, and other landscapes, crystal clear and dreamlike. The ice cave group is located in a mountain body at an altitude of 1,600 meters, forming a sharp contrast with the warm temperate climate outside the cave. Its formation mechanism is still a research hotspot in the geological community. Tourists need to wear safety helmets when entering. The tour route inside the cave is about 500 meters long, and the tour time is about 30 minutes.
Ta'erpo Ancient Village
Ta'erpo Ancient Village was originally named Ta'erpo because Laozi once stayed here, and was later renamed Ta'erpo. The ancient village is built along the mountain, covering an area of about 50,000 square meters. There are more than 60 existing cave dwellings, all buildings from the Ming and Qing dynasties, mainly stone-built cave dwellings, preserving the original style of "cave dwelling." The village has folk experience areas such as a wedding custom hall, shadow puppet theater hall, and handicraft hall. Tourists can participate in traditional activities such as grinding, weaving, and paper-cutting. The thousand-year-old locust tree at the village entrance is about 20 meters high, with a trunk diameter of about 3 meters, requiring four people to encircle it. It is regarded by villagers as a "sacred tree" and is a witness to the history of the ancient village.
Zushi Peak
Zushi Peak is the core Taoist building of Yunqiu Mountain. It is located at the top of a mountain at an altitude of 1,330 meters. It was first built during the Song and Yuan dynasties, and the existing buildings are reconstructions from the Ming and Qing dynasties, covering an area of about 800 square meters. Zushi Peak adopts the xieshan-style architectural style, with the whole structure made of brick and stone, divided into three levels: the bottom level is an arched cave, the middle level is a hall, and the top level is the Yuhuang Pavilion. To reach the top, one must climb 208 stone steps, with附属 buildings such as the Earth God Temple and Lingguan Temple along the way. Standing at Zushi Peak, one can overlook the panoramic view of Yunqiu Mountain. In the early morning, it is often surrounded by cloud seas, like a fairyland, and it is an excellent location for watching the sunrise.
Yuhuang Peak
Yuhuang Peak is the main peak of Yunqiu Mountain, with an altitude of 1,629 meters, making it one of the highest peaks in southern Shanxi. At the top stands the Yuhuang Pavilion, about 15 meters high, a four-cornered pyramidal-roof building enshrining a statue of the Jade Emperor. The hiking trail leading to Yuhuang Peak is about 2 kilometers long, with landscapes such as Xuanshi Stone and Wanghai Stone along the way. There is an observation deck at the top with an area of about 300 square meters. On clear days, one can see the Yellow River in the distance, with a broad field of vision. During the Zhonghe Festival every year, Yuhuang Peak is the main venue for the heaven-worshipping ceremony, with flourishing incense.
Yulian Cave
Yulian Cave is a naturally formed karst cave. It is named because the stalactites inside resemble jade lotuses. The cave entrance is about 10 meters wide and about 5 meters high, and the cave extends about 50 meters deep. It is said to be the place where Laozi made alchemy. Inside the cave, there are relics such as a Ming dynasty stone tablet and an alchemy furnace. Outside the cave, Taoist buildings such as the Sanqing Hall and Yuhuang Hall were built, covering an area of about 1,200 square meters, forming an architectural pattern of "cave and temple integrated." The area around Yulian Cave is densely vegetated, and in summer the temperature is 5-8°C lower than at the foot of the mountain, making it a summer resort.
Shenxian Valley
Shenxian Valley is the canyon landscape of Yunqiu Mountain, with a total length of about 3 kilometers. Inside the valley, streams murmur and ancient trees tower to the sky. It is named after the legend that Lü Dongbin once practiced cultivation here. Dozens of waterfalls are distributed in the canyon, with the largest waterfall having a drop of about 30 meters, with water flowing continuously throughout the four seasons. Wooden boardwalks and stone-paved paths are set up in the valley, with landscapes such as Hitching Post and Wangxian Pavilion along the way. The negative oxygen ion concentration in the air is as high as 100,000 per cubic centimeter, making it a natural oxygen bar. Tourists can walk along the stream and experience the artistic conception of "traveling in a painting."
