History and Culture

Legend has it that during the reign of Emperor Yao, an old woman ascended to immortality on the mountain, hence the name "Taimu Mountain" (originally "Taimu" – "Grandmother Mountain"). In the Western Han dynasty, the character "mu" was changed to its present form, officially naming it "Taimu Mountain." The mountain flourished during the Tang and Song dynasties, with a long history and many ancient temples. At that time, there were thirty-six monasteries on the northern and southern slopes, among which Guoxing Temple, Ruiyun Temple, Lingfeng Temple, Bajiao Temple, and Tianwang Temple were the largest. To this day, the site of Guoxing Temple still retains 360 stone pillars, with the Lengjia Pagoda in front and stone carvings of figures, flowers, birds, and animals from the Tang and Song periods, as well as stone tablets. The mountain also hosts dozens of cliff inscriptions by famous figures throughout history, such as "The First Mountain under Heaven," "Great View of Mountains and Seas," and "Land of Taoism, Buddhism, and Immortals."

Main Attractions

The Taimu Mountain Peaks are the essence of the scenic area, covering a sightseeing area of 24.6 square kilometers. Here the peaks are steep and precipitous, the rocks fantastically shaped, the caves deep and serene, and the clouds and mist swirling. It is renowned for the "four wonders": steep peaks, strange rocks, mysterious caves, and ethereal mist, earning it the reputation of "Fairy Capital on the Sea." The 360 rock formations are vividly shaped as if sculpted by an abstract master, with the most famous being the Husband-and-Wife Peak, Golden Turtle Climbing the Wall, and Nine Carp Leaping Skyward. This zone is divided into several sub-areas: Yingxian Terrace, Huludong (Gourd Cave), Jiuli Peak, Yipianwa (Tile-rock), Xiangshan Temple, Moxiao Peak, Guoxing Temple, Tianmen Ridge, and Yuhu Nunnery.

Formerly known as Fuyao Archipelago, the largest island, Dajieshan, measures 7.7 km from east to west and 2.76 km from north to south, with an area of 21.50 square kilometers and a coastline of 31.97 km.
