History and Culture

The origin of the name Jinji Lake can be traced back to the Spring and Autumn period. Legend has it that Qiongji, the daughter of King Fuchai of Wu, accidentally fell into the lake while playing by its shore. Later generations named the lake "Qiongji Lake" in her memory, which evolved into "Jinji Lake" over time. However, this legend has no confirmed historical records and more reflects the local people's humanistic imagination regarding the lake.

From a historical and geographical perspective, Jinji Lake was originally a branch of Taihu Lake and was called "Jinjing Lake" in ancient times. Its surrounding area was mainly farmland and wetlands and was a traditional fishing and farming region. Since the 1990s, with the development and construction of Suzhou Industrial Park, the area around Jinji Lake gradually transformed from low-lying land into a modern new urban district. Through ecological governance and landscape development, the lake has become an urban public space integrating ecological protection, leisure tourism, and cultural display. Its development process witnesses the rapid changes in China's urban new district construction.

Main Attractions

Jinji Lake Ferris Wheel Park

Jinji Lake Ferris Wheel Park is located along the eastern shore of the lake. With a 120-meter-high over-water Ferris wheel as its core, it is one of the landmark attractions of the scenic area. The Ferris wheel has a total of 60 cabins, each capable of holding 6 people, and takes about 30 minutes to complete one rotation. Riders can enjoy a 360-degree panoramic view of Jinji Lake and the surrounding urban landscape. The park also features amusement facilities such as a roller coaster and carousel, covering a total area of about 37,000 square meters, making it suitable for families and young visitors. At night, the Ferris wheel lights up with brilliant illuminations that reflect beautifully on the lake surface, making it a popular spot for photos.

Gate of the Orient

The Gate of the Orient is located on the west side of Jinji Lake, spanning the main road of Suzhou Industrial Park. It has a total floor area of about 463,000 square meters and a total height of 301.8 meters. Because its shape resembles a pair of trousers, it is affectionately called "Big Long Johns" by netizens. The building is divided into two towers, north and south, connected by a corridor in the middle, and includes high-end shopping malls, Grade-A office buildings, and five-star hotels. Visitors can enter the mall for shopping and leisure, or go to the observation deck at the top (separate ticket required, 180 yuan per person) to overlook Jinji Lake and the panoramic view of the park and experience the collision between modern architecture and lake scenery.

Jinji Lake Culture and Arts Center

Jinji Lake Culture and Arts Center is located on the west shore of the lake. It was designed by the famous architect Paul Andreu, and its shape resembles a blooming lotus. Its total floor area is about 150,000 square meters. The center includes a grand theater, concert hall, art museum, cinema, and other facilities. The grand theater has 1,200 seats and regularly stages high-quality performances such as operas, dramas, and concerts; the art museum regularly holds domestic and international art exhibitions and is an important cultural exchange platform in Suzhou. The building's exterior and its reflection on the lake form a "lotus on the water" landscape, making it a must-visit place for art lovers.

Li Gong Causeway

Li Gong Causeway is the only long causeway in Jinji Lake, with a total length of 1,400 meters. It was first built during the Guangxu period of the Qing Dynasty and was supervised by Li Chaoqiong, then magistrate of Yuanhe County, hence its name. After renovation, today's Li Gong Causeway retains the architectural style of a traditional Jiangnan water town. Restaurants, teahouses, cafes, and galleries are distributed along both sides, making it a characteristic district integrating leisure, dining, and culture. The causeway is shaded by green trees, with viewing platforms set up at intervals for enjoying the lake view. At night when the lights come on, the ancient-style buildings and the modern lake view complement each other, displaying the unique charm of "blending the ancient and the modern."

Jinji Lake Music Fountain

Jinji Lake Music Fountain is located in the West Lakeside Square and is a landmark nighttime landscape of the scenic area. The main body of the fountain is 130 meters long and 20 meters wide, with a maximum jet height of 108 meters. Combining music, lighting, water screen films, and other elements, the fountain presents diverse water dance performances, each lasting about 20 minutes. Performances are usually held on Friday and Saturday evenings and holidays (specific times adjust with the seasons, mostly 20:00-20:20 in summer). It is open to the public free of charge and attracts a large number of tourists to stop and watch.
