The tourist area covers a total area of approximately 21.5 square kilometers, of which the water area accounts for more than 60%. It boasts nearly 80 kilometers of Lake Taihu shoreline and numerous islands in the lake. The scenic area is characterized by "mountains and waters interdependent, city and lake coexisting," integrating diverse elements such as natural ecology, historical culture, and folk customs. It features well-known attractions such as Sanshan Island, Xishan Island, Guangfu Ancient Town, and Qionglong Mountain. The highest altitude in the area is approximately 341.7 meters (the main peak of Qionglong Mountain). It receives over 3 million visitors annually and is the core area for experiencing the Taihu landscape and Jiangnan culture.

Historical Culture

The history of the Suzhou Taihu Tourist Area can be traced back to the Neolithic Age. Sanshan Island has yielded a Paleolithic site dating back approximately 10,000 years, where cultural relics such as stone axes and stone adzes were discovered, confirming the traces of early human activity in the Lake Taihu basin. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, this was a place where Wu and Yue cultures blended. It preserves sites related to King Helü of Wu's military training ground and legends associated with King Goujian of Yue tasting gall and sleeping on brushwood. The Sun Wu Garden in the Qionglong Mountain Scenic Area is said to be the place where Sun Wu wrote The Art of War.

During the Tang and Song dynasties, Lake Taihu became a favored destination for literati to travel and compose poetry. Bai Juyi, Su Shi, Fan Chengda, and others all left poems depicting the scenery of Lake Taihu. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Guangfu Ancient Town got its name from "lake scenery and mountain colors, a land of blessing" and became an important handicraft town in Jiangnan, famous for jade carving and nut carving techniques. It still retains the layout of Ming dynasty ancient streets and traditional workshops. In addition, Mingyuewan Ancient Village on Xishan Island was first built in the Spring and Autumn period. It currently preserves nearly a hundred Ming and Qing buildings. Ancient docks, ancient ancestral halls, and other relics witnessed the rise and fall of Taihu fishing culture.

Main Attractions

Xishan Island

Xishan Island is the largest island in Lake Taihu, with an area of approximately 79.8 square kilometers. It is connected to the mainland by the Taihu Bridge. The island is characterized by natural ecology and ancient villages. It has attractions such as Piaomiao Peak (altitude 336.6 meters, the highest peak in Lake Taihu), Linwu Cave (total area 1,800 square meters, a Taoist holy site since the Tang dynasty), and Shigong Mountain (surrounded by water on three sides, known for "strange rocks, secluded caves, and sweet springs"). Mingyuewan Ancient Village is located at the southern end of the island. The village retains a 250-meter-long Ming dynasty stone slab street. The thousand-year-old camphor tree at the village entrance has a trunk circumference of 5 meters. It is said to be the place where King Fuchai of Wu and Xi Shi admired the moon. It is also a filming location for films and television dramas such as "Oranges Turn Red."

Guangfu Ancient Town

Guangfu Ancient Town was first built in the Qin dynasty, with a total area of approximately 62 square kilometers. It is one of the oldest ancient towns by Lake Taihu. The town retains the Ming and Qing layout of "one river, two streets." Situ Temple contains four thousand-year-old cypress trees. Because of their different shapes, Emperor Qianlong bestowed upon them the names "Qing, Qi, Gu, Guai" (Clear, Strange, Ancient, Odd). Xiangxuehai on the western side of the ancient town is a famous plum-viewing destination in Jiangnan, with more than a thousand mu of plum trees planted. When plum blossoms bloom in early spring, the mountains and fields look like they are covered with snow. The name "Xiangxuehai" was inscribed by the Qing dynasty literatus Song Luo and is still used today. In addition, the Guangfu Nut Carving Museum in the town displays the inheritance and development of national-level intangible cultural heritage nut carving techniques.

Qionglong Mountain

Qionglong Mountain is located on the eastern shore of Lake Taihu. Its main peak, Ruomao Peak, has an altitude of 341.7 meters, making it the highest among the mountains in the Lake Taihu basin. The scenic area covers a total area of approximately 10.5 square kilometers, with a forest coverage rate of over 90%. It is a national-level forest park. Sun Wu Garden in the mountain is said to be the place where Sun Wu lived in seclusion and wrote his book. It currently preserves buildings such as Sun Wu's Thatched Cottage and the Hall of the Military Sage, displaying relics related to The Art of War. Qionglong Temple was first built in the Southern Dynasties. The existing main hall was rebuilt in the Qing dynasty. The site of Ningbang Temple next to the temple preserves Song dynasty stone carvings. The mountain trails total approximately 15 kilometers. From the summit, visitors can overlook Lake Taihu and the panorama of Suzhou's urban area.

Sanshan Island

Sanshan Island is located in the middle of Lake Taihu and consists of three islands: Dashan, Xingshan, and Xiaogushan. It covers a total area of approximately 1.8 square kilometers. Visitors must take a ferry from the Dongshan Pier (one-way 30 yuan per person, 20-minute voyage) to reach the island. There are no motor vehicles on the island, and it retains its original fishing family style. It has natural wonders such as Banbi Peak (a cliff formed by natural giant rocks, approximately 15 meters high) and the Sphinx Rock. Paleolithic cultural relics unearthed on the island are stored in the Sanshan Island Site Museum. The museum displays stone tools, animal fossils, and other exhibits, witnessing the ancient civilization of the Lake Taihu basin.
