Xiuhu Park is located in Bishan District, Chongqing, and is a national 4A-level tourist attraction. Covering an area of approximately 1,500 mu (about 100 hectares), with a water body of about 500 mu (33 hectares), the park is distinguished by its integration of natural landscapes and Bayu culture, with the theme of "enjoying water," creating a unique urban ecological scenery. Inside the park, there is a 20-kilometer waterside promenade for visitors to stroll and enjoy the views; over 800 rare trees ensure seasonal greenery. In addition, the park features more than 30 antique buildings, including pavilions, terraces, waterside galleries, and corridors, with a total floor area of about 8,000 square meters, exuding a rich classical charm.
History and Culture
Xiuhu Park carries a profound Bayu cultural heritage. The Bishan area has a long history, and Bayu culture has been passed down and developed here. The architectural style of the park draws on traditional Bayu architectural features, such as upturned eaves, carved beams, and painted rafters, showcasing the exquisite craftsmanship of Bayu artisans. Meanwhile, through landscape installations and cultural corridors, the park displays Bishan's historical stories, folklore, and poetry—for example, inscribing verses written by ancient scholars about Bishan on stone tablets within the park, allowing visitors to appreciate the local history and culture while enjoying the scenery. The park also regularly hosts Bayu folk cultural activities, such as Sichuan opera performances and demonstrations of traditional handicrafts, further promoting Bayu culture.
Major Attractions
Xiuhu Pavilion
Xiuhu Pavilion is the landmark building of Xiuhu Park, located on the south bank of the core water area. It stands about 48 meters tall, has 7 floors, and covers a floor area of approximately 1,200 square meters. Adopting the Ming and Qing dynasty Jiangnan-style pavilion architecture, with upturned eaves, carved beams, and painted rafters, it features a predominantly vermilion and bright yellow color scheme with grey-blue tiled roofs, presenting an antique elegance.
Xiuhu Lake
Xiuhu Lake is the park's central landscape, with a water area of about 500 mu (33 hectares). The lake water is crystal clear, and the shimmering surface complements the surrounding green hills and trees. Several small islands in the lake are covered with lush vegetation and host various bird species. Visitors can take a boat ride to enjoy the lake and mountain views, or stop at the lakeside platforms to feel the breeze and watch fish swimming in the water.
Musical Fountain
Located in the core water area, adjacent to the landmark Xiuhu Pavilion, the Musical Fountain is an immersive landscape facility integrating sound, light, water, and electricity. The fountain consists of over 200 sets of different nozzle types, including high jets, running jets, fan jets, and rotary jets. The main high-jet nozzle can reach a maximum height of 60 meters (equivalent to a 20-story building), while the surrounding running and fan jets create "water dance" effects in sync with the music. With more than 400 underwater LED lights, it can display 16 colors including red, blue, green, and purple.
Zhuangyuan Bridge
Zhuangyuan Bridge is a landmark stone arch bridge in the park, about 30 meters long and 5 meters wide. Its name derives from Bishan's historical "zhuangyuan" (top scholar) culture. The bridge is ornately carved, with traditional auspicious patterns on the railings. Walking across the bridge, visitors can not only appreciate its architectural beauty but also feel the profound cultural heritage of Bishan. Standing on the bridge offers a panoramic view of Xiuhu Lake, making it an excellent spot for photo-taking.
Water Street
Located in the southeastern part of the park, adjacent to the main Xiuhu Lake and the ecological wetland, Water Street is a characteristic block centered on "waterfront leisure and cultural experience," covering about 8,000 square meters. The architecture adopts Jiangnan water-town style, with white walls, dark grey tiles, and wooden pillars, featuring over 20 shops and cultural experience spaces arranged in a staggered layout.
