Shibaozhai is located in Zhong County, Chongqing Municipality, and is a national 4A-level tourist attraction. The site is highly distinctive, with its landmark building—the Shibaozhai Pagoda—being a wooden structure built against the mountain. It has 12 stories and stands 56 meters tall. Shibaozhai is renowned for its unique architectural style and rich historical and cultural significance. The entire scenic area covers approximately 50,000 square meters, featuring beautiful mountains and clear waters, with picturesque natural surroundings that complement the cultural landmarks. The architecture of Shibaozhai skillfully blends traditional Chinese architectural art with local cultural characteristics, making it one of the largest and most multi-storied existing Chuandou-style (mortise-and-tenon) wooden structures in China.
History and Culture
Shibaozhai was first built during the Wanli period of the Ming Dynasty, comprising an ancient architectural complex that integrates a fortress, a temple, and a city. Legend has it that Shibaozhai was erected in honor of Nüwa mending the heavens, and many related myths and legends are still told locally. During the Qianlong period of the Qing Dynasty, Shibaozhai underwent large-scale repairs and expansions, gradually reaching its present scale.
Historically, Shibaozhai was an important cultural and trade hub along the Yangtze River. Passing boats and travelers would stop here, bringing diverse cultures and goods for exchange. The site has witnessed the development and changes of the Yangtze River basin, and its architectural style and cultural connotations have been influenced by various cultures, including Bayu culture and Yangtze River culture.
Shibaozhai is not only a treasure of architectural art but also carries the local historical memory and cultural heritage. Many traditional folk activities and festivals, such as temple fairs, are held here, attracting numerous tourists and local residents.
