Zhongdu Original Grassland Resort

Zhongdu Original Grassland Resort is located in Zhangbei County, Zhangjiakou City, Hebei Province. It is a national 4A-level tourist attraction and one of the best-preserved and most representative pristine grasslands in North China. The scenic area is known for its vast grassland scenery, rich Mongolian customs, and abundant amusement projects. The resort covers an area of about 2,000 mu and features distinctive buildings such as various yurts and luxury wooden cabins. There are more than 100 yurts, and the largest yurt can accommodate 1,500 people for dining or gatherings at the same time. The average altitude here is 1,400 meters. The summer climate is cool, with an average temperature of around 21°C, making it an ideal place for summer vacationing. The vegetation coverage on the grassland is over 90%, with green grass like a carpet and wildflowers everywhere, presenting a unique grassland ecological landscape.

Historical Culture

Zhangbei County, where Zhongdu Original Grassland is located, was historically the site of Yuan Zhongdu. Yuan Zhongdu was one of the three capitals of the Yuan Dynasty. It was built by Emperor Wuzong of Yuan, Haishan, in 1307 AD. Although it existed for only a relatively short time, it held an important position in Yuan history and was an important political, military, and cultural hub at the time.

The historical and cultural elements in the scenic area are mostly related to Yuan Zhongdu culture and grassland nomadic culture. Here, visitors can experience the traditional customs of the Mongolian people. For example, the origin of the Naadam Festival can be traced back to ancient Mongolian sacrificial rituals. It later gradually evolved into a grand event integrating sports, entertainment, and trade. The scenic area also regularly holds similar events to inherit and display this ancient cultural tradition. In addition, the food culture and clothing culture of the grassland also carry the long-standing life wisdom and historical accumulation of nomadic peoples.

Main Attractions

Grassland Amusement Park

Grassland Amusement Park is the core amusement area in the resort, covering about 300 mu. It offers a variety of entertainment projects suitable for visitors of different ages. These include a 1,000-meter-long grassland slide, where visitors can ride a slide cart quickly down and experience thrilling excitement. There is also an equestrian club covering 50 mu, with more than 50 fine horses, offering professional equestrian training and horse-riding experiences, allowing visitors to enjoy galloping freely on the grassland. In addition, the park has archery ranges, go-kart tracks, and other facilities to meet the diverse recreational needs of visitors.

Mongolian Customs Park

Mongolian Customs Park showcases traditional Mongolian culture and customs, covering about 200 mu. The park contains a cluster of traditional yurts, each arranged according to Mongolian architectural style and daily life scenes. Visitors can enter the yurts to learn about the daily life of herders. The park also hosts Mongolian song and dance performances. Performers wear splendid ethnic costumes and present classic programs such as morin khuur performances and bowl dances. It also offers Mongolian specialty foods such as roast whole lamb and hand-held mutton, allowing visitors to experience Mongolian customs in all aspects.

The World's Largest Yurt

The World's Largest Yurt. It is the world's largest yurt. It is located in the central area of the scenic spot and was completed on August 1, 2010. It has a diameter of 60.7 meters, a height of 21.3 meters, and a total covered area of 3,180 square meters. On September 15, 2010, Qingshu Hall received a "World's Best Certificate" from the China World Records Association. Its interior is luxuriously decorated and integrates dining, entertainment, conference, and performance functions. It can accommodate 1,500 people dining at the same time.


Flower Sea Landscape Area

Flower Sea Landscape Area covers about 500 mu and is planted with various flowers such as calendula, corn poppy, and lavender, forming a colorful sea of flowers. The blooming season lasts from June to August each year. Visitors can stroll through the flower sea, enjoy the scenery, and take photos. The scenic area has also set up viewing platforms and walkways in the flower sea, making it convenient for sightseeing and a good place for leisure and relaxation.


Iron Flower Fireworks Performance

This national-level intangible cultural heritage, which originated from Taoist sacrificial rituals in the Northern Song Dynasty, now radiates a distinctive charm under the starry sky of the grassland. Bare-chested iron-flower artisans forcefully strike molten iron heated to as high as 1,600°C into the sky. In an instant, the molten iron turns into a sky full of stars and rain, spreading like fiery trees and silver flowers, colorful and dazzling. This is not only a visual feast but also embodies the beautiful wish "Strike flowers, strike flowers, the more you strike, the more prosperous you become," and demonstrates the fearless spirit of Mongolian warriors. When the iron flowers and the grassland night scenery enhance each other, every witness will be deeply amazed by this spectacular scene and left with an unforgettable memory.


Tour Route:

Recommended one-day tour route: After arriving at the scenic area in the morning, first go to the Mongolian Customs Park to experience traditional Mongolian architecture and culture, watch song and dance performances, and taste specialty food, about 2 hours; then go to the Grassland Amusement Park to experience horse riding, archery, the grassland slide, and other amusement projects, about 3 hours; in the afternoon, go to the Flower Sea Landscape Area to enjoy the beautiful flower sea and take photos, about 1.5 hours; finally go to the Yuan Zhongdu Ruins to learn about history and culture, about 1.5 hours. If time permits, you can choose to stay overnight in the scenic area and experience the grassland night view and bonfire party.

Travel Tips:

The best season to visit is June to August, when the grassland vegetation is lush, the flower sea is in full bloom, and the climate is cool.

The suggested duration is 1-2 days, allowing you to fully experience the various attractions and activities in the scenic area.

When visiting the Grassland Amusement Park, choose activities according to your own interests and physical strength. Before horseback riding, follow the instructions of the staff.

When visiting the Flower Sea Landscape Area, protect the flowers and do not pick them at will.

If you plan to watch the bonfire party, you can ask the scenic area in advance about the activity time; it is usually held on summer evenings.

Dining in the scenic area mainly features Mongolian specialty food, but other cuisines are also available; choose according to your personal taste.

Precautions:

The temperature difference between day and night in the grassland area is large. Even in summer, you need to bring a jacket at night to keep warm.

Ultraviolet rays are strong, so take sun protection measures, such as applying sunscreen, wearing a hat, and sunglasses.

Respect local ethnic customs and culture. Do not touch items in the yurts at will, and abide by the rules of the scenic area.

The scenic area is large; it is recommended to wear comfortable sports shoes for walking.

Protect the scenic area's environment, do not litter, and keep the grassland clean.

When participating in amusement projects, observe safety regulations, follow staff instructions, and ensure your own safety.

There are many mosquitoes on the grassland in summer; you may bring mosquito repellent and other mosquito-proof supplies.

Transportation:

By car: Starting from Beijing, drive along the Beijing-Tibet Expressway (G6) to the Zhangbei South Exit, then take the Zhangjiakou-Shijiazhuang Expressway to Zhangbei County town, and then follow road signs to the Zhongdu Original Grassland Resort. The total distance is about 300 kilometers, and the drive takes about 4 hours.

Public transportation: Take a long-distance bus from Beijing Liuliqiao Coach Station to Zhangbei County; the journey takes about 5 hours. After arriving in Zhangbei County, you can take a local taxi or tourist shuttle to the scenic area; the taxi ride takes about 20 minutes.

Tourist shuttle: Some travel agencies operate tourist routes to the Zhongdu Original Grassland Resort; you can inquire and register in advance.

Opening Hours:

Opening hours vary with the seasons. In summer (June 1-August 31), opening hours are 7:00-22:00; in spring and autumn (April 1-May 31 and September 1-October 31), opening hours are 8:00-18:00; in winter (November 1-March 31 of the following year), some attractions are closed, and open areas are open from 9:00-17:00. Specific opening hours are subject to the scenic area's announcements on the day.
