Lingnan Impression Park

Lingnan Impression Park is located at Waihuan West Road, Xiaoguwei Island, Panyu District, Guangzhou, Guangdong Province, on the southern part of Guangzhou University City. It is a national AAAA-level tourist attraction and a cultural tourism park dedicated to displaying traditional Lingnan residential architecture, folk culture, and intangible crafts. Covering an area of 165,000 square meters, the park was renovated from existing village remains. Its overall architectural style emulates the rural settlements of the late Qing and early Republic of China periods, featuring typical Lingnan architectural forms such as wok-handle houses (gable roofs shaped like iron wok handles), oyster-shell walls, arcade buildings, ancestral halls, courtyards, and bluestone-paved alleys. The park’s core appeal lies in its authentic Lingnan folk customs, bringing together Cantonese opera, Guangzhou-style snacks, traditional handicrafts, and folk performances to present a vivid picture of Cantonese community life. It is an important venue for experiencing the vernacular culture of Lingnan.

History and Culture

The park was originally the site of Lianxi Village, an ancient settlement on Xiaoguwei Island with a history spanning several hundred years. The village retained a large number of Lingnan dwellings and ancestral halls from the Qing dynasty to the Republican era. During the planning of Guangzhou University City, a conservation-oriented renovation project was launched to protect the local architectural heritage, preserving the original street layout and historical building frameworks while developing the park. After its official opening, the park has continued to research and present rural Cantonese folklore, clan culture, and market-town traditions.

The cultural scope of the park is primarily Cantonese (Guangfu) culture, blended with the water-town traditions of the Pearl River Delta. Traditional customs such as clan sacrificial rites, Dragon Boat Festival races, Mid-Autumn moon-gazing, wedding ceremonies, Cantonese opera amateur troupes, puppet shows, and lion dances are regularly staged here. The park also gathers traditional Lingnan crafts including Guangzhou porcelain (Guangcai), Guangzhou embroidery (Guangxiu), olive-pit carving, bamboo weaving, and paper-cutting. It recreates the social life of modern Lingnan with scenes of old markets, private schools, banks, pawnshops, and traditional teahouses, preserving the unique collective memory of the Pearl River Delta countryside.

Major Attractions

Lianxi Street

Lianxi Street is the park’s main thoroughfare, designed to simulate the marketplace of the late Qing and early Republic period in the Canton region. It is lined with arcade-style shops that recreate old-time general stores, herbal medicine shops, tailor shops, and photo studios. The street is paved with bluestone slabs, with vintage signage and bamboo awnings. Everyday folk stalls and traditional snack vendors operate here, making it a central area for sightseeing, experiencing local street life, and taking photos.

Wok-Handle House Cluster

This is an iconic group of Lingnan buildings, featuring fireproof gable walls shaped like the handles of a wok. The walls extensively use oyster shells, green bricks, and plaster sculpture. The interiors have been restored as typical Lingnan dwellings, with living rooms, bedrooms, and kitchens furnished in traditional Cantonese style, offering a direct view of rural household arrangements in the modern Pearl River Delta.

Huoshi Ancestral Hall

This ancestral hall originates from the original Lianxi Village and is a classic Lingnan clan temple, with a complete layout comprising an entrance gate, a courtyard, a worship pavilion, and a rear hall. It preserves wood carvings, brick carvings, plaster sculptures, and stone carvings — the “three carvings and one sculpture” typical of Lingnan decorative arts. Historically used for clan meetings and ancestral rites, it now hosts exhibitions on Lingnan clan culture and occasional traditional ceremonial performances.

Lianxi Stage

Built in the style of a traditional Cantonese opera stage, this venue regularly presents opera excerpts, lion dances, and Lingnan puppet shows. Its open design and carved wooden railings recreate the scene of rural opera performances where villagers would gather to watch.

Water-Town Lake Area

The park preserves a Lingnan water-town landscape with winding waterways, stone bridges, and landing steps. Visitors can enjoy the view of waterside dwellings, surrounded by lush greenery, illustrating the traditional lifestyle of living by the water in the Pearl River Delta. This area is ideal for a leisurely stroll and scenic appreciation.

Traditional Craft Workshops

These workshops are dedicated to crafts such as olive-pit carving, paper-cutting, Guangzhou embroidery, sugar painting, and more. Artisans demonstrate their skills on site, allowing visitors to observe Lingnan intangible cultural heritage up close, with some workshops offering hands-on experiences.
