Qingdao Olympic Sailing Marine Culture Tourism Area

The Qingdao Olympic Sailing Marine Culture Tourism Area is located in Shinan District, Qingdao, Shandong Province. It is a National 5A Tourist Attraction with a total area of about 5.28 square kilometers, covering the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center, Qingdao Underwater World, Xiaomai Island Park, and the surrounding coastal area. The scenic area features "sailing sports, marine science popularization, and coastal leisure" as its core characteristics, integrating Olympic culture, marine culture, and urban charm. Among them, the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center covers an area of about 45 hectares and has landmark facilities such as the Olympic Memorial Wall Wharf, Flag Array Square, and Lover's Dam. It once served as the sailing competition venue for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games and one of the venues for the 2018 SCO Qingdao Summit. Qingdao Underwater World has a building area of about 7,000 square meters and is a marine-themed venue integrating underwater sightseeing and science education. The scenic area is equipped with a visitor service center (building area of about 2,000 square meters), an ecological parking lot (about 1,000 parking spaces), and multiple coastal dining areas, providing comprehensive services for visitors.

History and Culture

The history of the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Marine Culture Tourism Area is closely linked to Qingdao's city card as the "Sailing Capital." In 2008, the Beijing Olympic Games sailing competition was held here. Facilities built during the event, such as the Olympic Memorial Wall and the Measurement Hall, became important carriers of Olympic culture and witnessed the development of China's sailing sports. The successful hosting of the 2018 SCO Qingdao Summit made this area an important window for international exchanges and added imprints of multicultural communication.

From the perspective of marine culture, the Laiyang Road area where Qingdao Underwater World is located became an important site for marine scientific research and science popularization as early as the early 20th century due to the establishment of the Qingdao Aquarium (China's first aquarium), continuing a century-old tradition of marine exploration. The surrounding historical districts such as Xiaoyushan and Badaguan integrate Chinese and Western architectural styles and, together with the coastal landscape, form the urban feature of "red tiles, green trees, blue sea, and blue sky," allowing the scenic area's natural landscape and cultural heritage to complement each other.

Main Attractions

Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center

The Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center covers an area of 45 hectares. Its core areas include the Olympic Memorial Wall Wharf (208 meters long), Flag Array Square (with 20 national flags of participating countries), and Lover's Dam (a 534-meter-long breakwater with a white lighthouse at the end). Visitors can visit the Olympic Sailing Museum (displaying cultural relics from the 2008 Olympic sailing events), or experience sailing and yacht trips (the sailing experience route is about 3 nautical miles, with a sailing time of 1 hour, and yacht rental is about 600 yuan/hour). At night, the lighthouse and the lights of surrounding buildings illuminate, forming a brilliant coastal night view that is a popular shooting spot for photography enthusiasts.

Qingdao Underwater World

Qingdao Underwater World consists of an underwater tunnel (82 meters long), an underwater hall, and marine life exhibition areas, displaying more than 300 species and tens of thousands of marine organisms. The underwater tunnel uses acrylic transparent glass, allowing visitors to enjoy large marine creatures such as sharks and rays swimming overhead from a 360° view. The central performance area has 3 "Dance with Sharks" performances every day (10:00, 14:00, 16:00), where divers interact with sharks and sea turtles, creating a spectacular scene. In addition, the scenic area also has an "Underwater Laboratory" science popularization area, which explains marine ecological knowledge through interactive installations and is suitable for family visits.

Xiaomai Island Park

Xiaomai Island Park is a coastal park surrounded by the sea on three sides, with an area of about 15.7 hectares, connected to the land by a boardwalk. The park features "island-ring sea viewing," with a 360° circular walkway (1.3 kilometers long) and multiple viewing platforms, from which visitors can overlook Fushan Bay and the "May Wind" sculpture in May Fourth Square. The park's vegetation is mainly lawns and native trees. When rapeseed flowers bloom in spring and cosmos flowers bloom in autumn, they form a fresh picture with the blue sea and sky. It is a popular place for citizens and tourists to camp and picnic (the park is free and open to the public, and open flames are prohibited).

Lover's Dam

Lover's Dam is a landmark landscape of the Qingdao Olympic Sailing Center. The 534-meter-long breakwater extends into the sea, with bars, cafes, and seafood restaurants on both sides. The white lighthouse at the end of the breakwater is 20 meters high and is a landmark building for couples to check in, especially romantic when the lights come on at night. Strolling along the dam, visitors can admire various yachts moored in the sailing marina and feel the vitality of the "Sailing Capital." In summer evenings, street artists often perform, adding to the leisure atmosphere.

Olympic Sailing Museum

The Olympic Sailing Museum is located in the Olympic Sailing Center, with a building area of about 9,400 square meters, divided into two floors. The first floor displays physical objects such as boats participating in the 2008 Olympic sailing competition (such as the champion boat "Qingdao"), medals, and athletes' equipment. The second floor uses multimedia interactive installations (such as a simulated sailing driving system) to recreate the event scenes, and visitors can experience a "virtual sailing race." The museum also has a special exhibition area for the SCO Qingdao Summit, displaying national gifts, venue arrangements, and other materials from the summit.

Food

Qingdao Beer Seafood Stalls

The seafood stalls around the Olympic Sailing Center feature "freshly caught and freshly cooked." Recommended dishes include steamed swimming crab (about 200-300 grams each, priced at 80-120 yuan), spicy stir-fried clams (30 yuan per portion), and grilled squid (10 yuan per skewer). Paired with local Qingdao beer (500 ml/bottle, 10 yuan), visitors can experience the authentic way of eating "seafood with beer." The stalls are mostly concentrated along Yan'erdao Road, with an average per capita consumption of about 80-120 yuan, and in summer they operate until 22:00.

Seaweed Buns

Seaweed buns are a traditional Qingdao snack. They are made with fresh seaweed (such as nori and wakame) mixed with pork and chives as filling, wrapped in wheat flour dough, and steamed. They have a savory taste with a sweet marine flavor. They can be tasted at the "Qingdao Specialty Snack Shop" next to the visitor service center of the Olympic Sailing Center. Each portion contains 6 buns and costs 20 yuan, suitable as breakfast or a snack.

Oil-Splashed Abalone

Oil-splashed abalone uses fresh local Qingdao abalone (about 100-150 grams each). After steaming, hot oil is poured over it to release the aroma of minced garlic and chopped green onions, preserving the tender taste of the abalone. This dish is common in seafood restaurants at Lover's Dam. Each portion contains 4 abalone and costs about 120 yuan. It is a representative dish embodying Qingdao seafood's "original flavor" cooking philosophy.

Laoshan Green Tea Pastry

Laoshan green tea pastry is a dessert integrating local specialties. Laoshan green tea powder is added to the pastry crust, and the filling is mostly red bean paste or lotus seed paste. It has a crispy texture and a tea fragrance. It can be purchased at specialty shops in the Olympic Sailing Center. Each box (10 pieces) costs 30 yuan and is suitable as a souvenir.

Visitors can taste specialty noodles such as mackerel dumplings and cuttlefish dumplings.

In summer (July-August), the coastal ultraviolet rays are strong, so sun protection is necessary (sunscreen, hat, sunglasses). In the evening, the sea breeze is stronger, so a light jacket can be carried.
