Baishi Mountain Scenic Area

Baishi Mountain Scenic Area is located in Fenglianggou Village, Baishishan Town, Laiyuan County, Baoding City, Hebei Province. It is a Global Geopark, a National 5A Tourist Attraction, a National Forest Park, and a National Youth Science Popularization Education Base. It is located in the core area of the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region and adjacent to Xiong'an New Area. The scenic area is named after the abundant white marble on the mountain, and it is a famous mountain summer resort and a sacred mountain of love in China.

The scenic area covers about 54 square kilometers. Its landscapes combine the five major features of mountain scenery: wonder, grandeur, steepness, fantasy, and elegance, with the core being "wonder." It has China's unique marble peak forest landscape. In the peak forest, strange peaks gather, with steep cliffs and deep valleys, majestic and spectacular. The strange rocks on the peaks have different shapes, and the peak clusters are like a maze and too numerous to count. It has four major characteristics: many peaks, steep walls, unusual shapes, and dangerous positions. Baishi Mountain's body is towering and majestic. The peaks stand on the mountain top and in the canyons, with high peaks and deep valleys, fully displaying strength and firmness. Its "danger" is reflected in the thousands of peaks and cliffs that look as if cut by knives and axes, with dangerous ravines crisscrossing and huge single-wall height differences.

In summer and autumn, areas above 1,800 meters above sea level are often filled with thin mist and rolling cloud seas, forming various mysterious and unique celestial phenomena. It is the mountain where Buddha's light appears most frequently in the north. The scenic area has lush vegetation and abundant wildlife, and is one of the three major distribution centers of biodiversity in Hebei Province. In spring and autumn, it has the scenery of "one mountain with four seasons at once." Through cliffside plank roads, the scenic area connects the "Twelve Scenes of Baishi," including "Baishi Clear Clouds, Jiang Taigong Fishing, Bajie Marrying a Wife, Two Heroes Guarding the Mountain, Lingbo Weibu, Mountain Oath and Sea Vow, Baishi Rime Charm, Jingxin Flowing Mist, Deity of the Taihang Mountains, Three Sages Paying Homage to Buddha, Immortal Drying Boots, and Auspicious Cloud Buddha's Light," allowing tourists to easily enjoy changing scenery with every step.

Historical Culture

During the Liao and Song dynasties, Baishi Mountain was the boundary line between the two countries. It is also the boundary line between nature and humanities. During the Spring and Autumn period, Duling divided Yan and Zhao.

When Song and Liao forces fought, Yang Liulang, also known as Yang Yanzhao, was responsible for guarding the three passes and the passes in what is now northern Hebei. He repeatedly went to Chajianling and Baishikou to patrol the border, leaving behind many legends and stories. Out of respect for the Yang family generals, many place names and village names in Laiyuan are related to the Yang family generals, such as Jiaochang, Chajianling, Doujunwan, and Muji Village. To commemorate Yang Liulang, people named the mountain peak on the western ridge of Baishi Mountain that resembles a human figure "Liulang Peak," and named the western ridge "General Ridge."

Main Attractions

Baishi Clear Clouds

The second peak of Baishi Mountain, Yunding, is clearly visible and stands 2,057 meters above sea level. Warm and humid air currents from the southeast climb along the mountain foot, condense when encountering cold air currents, and are blocked and stored in the mountain by the mountain body. Even on clear days, they are often surrounded by clouds and mist. The landscape formed by the combination of peaks and clouds is called "Baishi Clear Clouds." In summer and autumn, clouds and mist swirl around, and the peaks appear and disappear. When sunlight shines directly on the cloud layer, sun rays are often visible.

Two Heroes Guarding the Mountain

On the cliff are two side-by-side huge stones. Through continuous physical weathering and gradual peeling, the "Two Heroes Stones" were formed. Legend has it that during the Liao and Song dynasties, Yang Liulang and his son guarded three passes, including this place. People named the stone pillars after these two heroes to commemorate the patriotic generals. On the vertical steep wall there is also a hanging stone, suspended halfway up the mountain and not falling for hundreds of millions of years. The Two Heroes Stone Glass Plank Road was built in 2014. It is located on the main tourist route at an altitude of 1,900 meters, with a total length of 95 meters and a width of 2 meters. It is China's first suspended glass plank road with the highest altitude, longest length, and greatest width.

Mountain Oath Platform

Mountain Oath Platform is located on a marble isolated peak at an altitude of 1,900 meters. It is named for its heart shape, a symbol of love. The natural giant stone at the center of the platform has been built into the "Heart to Heart" feature, implying eternal love and enduring union. Couples standing on the platform hand in hand and touching the heart stone to make a wish will stay together. The "Meeting at Mountain Oath Platform" love-themed cultural activity is also held here.

Deity of the Taihang Mountains

The "Deity of the Taihang Mountains" is a mountain body with a special shape, standing independently among the peaks. According to legend, people who cultivated Dao and immortality at Baishi Mountain practiced here. This is an excellent place to absorb the essence of the sun and moon. After hundreds of millions of years of natural baptism, it still stands, guarding Laiyuan, Baishi Mountain, and the Taihang Mountains.

Immortal Drying Boots

According to legend, during the Yan and Zhao period, a person who attained the Dao was attracted by the beautiful scenery of Baishi Mountain and stopped to rest. One foot spanned Baishi Mountain, and one foot remained elsewhere, so one boot was left on Baishi Mountain. Baishi Mountain therefore also has the name "Little Baishi Mountain of the North."

Xiangyun Gate

Xiangyun Gate is located beside Xiangyun Peak. In summer, when there is much fog, standing on the gate tower one can see white clouds changing in countless ways, like ten thousand horses galloping in the ninth heaven, a magnificent sight. Therefore, it is named Xiangyun Gate.

Feihu Gorge

According to legend, at the end of the Yin and Tang period, a thousand-year-old spirit fox ate ten-thousand-year pine nuts, obtained the essence of the sun and moon, and transformed into an immortal. It could transform into three images: a young girl, an old woman, and an old man, and often appeared as a saint to save people from suffering. Because it is said that flying foxes appeared most frequently here, it was named Feihu Gorge.

Cliffside Corridor

The corridor was first built in 2011, with a total length of more than 280 meters. It is located halfway up a cliff at an altitude of more than 1,600 meters, with a net height difference of more than 350 meters. The project draws on the ancient Bashu plank road construction method and combines it with modern reinforced concrete construction technology. It is scientific, safe, grand, and spectacular, highlighting the "danger" of Baishi Mountain.

Red Birch Forest

Baishi Mountain has dense vegetation, with a forest coverage rate of over 80% and 739 species of higher plants. It is one of the three major distribution centers of biodiversity in Hebei Province and preserves large areas of original secondary forest. The red birch forest growing between 1,600 meters and 2,000 meters above sea level is a representative plant of Baishi Mountain.
