History and Culture

Quanzhou Puppet Theater was specially built for the preservation and inheritance of Quanzhou String Puppet Show. The art form, anciently known as "suspended string puppets" or "Jiali Opera" (auspicious ceremonial drama), is the oldest and most completely preserved puppetry genre in China. Originating in the Qin and Han dynasties, it was introduced to southern Fujian during the Jin and Tang dynasties, took shape in the late Tang and Five Dynasties, and continued to develop through the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties—a tradition spanning over a thousand years. In 2006, Quanzhou String Puppet Show was inscribed on the first batch of China's National Intangible Cultural Heritage List; in 2012, it was included in UNESCO's Register of Good Safeguarding Practices for Intangible Cultural Heritage, becoming the first Chinese theatrical item to receive this honor.

The theater is operated by the Quanzhou Puppet Troupe, established in 1952, which is the most influential professional string puppet performance ensemble both domestically and internationally. The troupe has toured more than 80 countries and regions worldwide and has performed at major events such as the Beijing Olympics and the Shanghai World Expo. The completion of Quanzhou Puppet Theater marked a transformation of Quanzhou String Puppet Show from folk performances to modern, professional, and standardized heritage presentations, making it a vital carrier for the living inheritance of intangible cultural heritage and an important window for showcasing Minnan culture and Maritime Silk Road culture to the world.
