Features: Compared to the second edition, the third edition has been revised as follows:
① The content on nucleic acids has been expanded. To highlight the biological functions of nucleic acids, the chemical structure and biological function of nucleic acids have been separated and presented as a standalone chapter. The content aims to clarify fundamental principles while introducing the latest advancements, along with an increased focus on gene expression regulation and molecular biology techniques.
② The original chapter "Biochemical Morphology of Cells" has been renamed "Structure and Function of Biological Membranes." The purpose is to emphasize one of the key topics in biochemistry—biological membranes. The original "Protein Metabolism" and "Nucleotide Metabolism in Nucleic Acids" have been merged and renamed "Metabolism of Nitrogen-Containing Small Molecules" due to their close relationship, facilitating student understanding.
③ Some content from the "Vitamins and Coenzymes" chapter has been combined with enzymology, with a focus on the coenzyme functions of vitamins. The content of the "Regulation of Metabolism" chapter has been distributed across relevant chapters and gene expression regulation, no longer forming a standalone chapter.
④ The content of the "Hormones" chapter has already been covered in physiology and is not included in this book.
⑤ "Metabolism of Water and Inorganic Salts" remains an important part of animal whole-body metabolism and is retained. Chapters such as "Blood Chemistry," "Biochemistry of Tissues and Organs," and "Biochemistry of Milk and Eggs" reflect the characteristics of "Animal Biochemistry" and are retained, though their content has been revised. After this rewrite, the entire book has been reduced from 19 chapters to 14 chapters. Although chapters on protein chemistry, enzymology, carbohydrate metabolism, biooxidation, and lipid metabolism have been expanded during the rewrite, the total word count of the third edition is still lower than the original, adapting to the needs of teaching reform.
