Beining Park

Beining Park is located at No. 1 Zhongshan North Road, Hebei District, Tianjin. It is a comprehensive park with a century-long history and is now a national 4A-level tourist attraction. The park was first built in 1906, originally named "Planting Garden," and after multiple renovations and expansions, it has become an urban park integrating garden landscapes, historical buildings, and leisure entertainment. The scenic area is characterized by classical garden style, blending the elegance of Jiangnan gardens with the grandeur of northern gardens. Within the park, waterside pavilions, winding bridges, flowing water, and rockeries complement one another, with a high vegetation coverage rate and distinct scenery in each season. The park covers a total area of about 570,000 square meters, of which the water area is about 180,000 square meters. It contains multiple ancient buildings in Ming and Qing styles, such as Zhiyuan Pagoda, the Nine-Turn Bridge, and Deyue Pavilion. It is one of the gardens in downtown Tianjin with a long history and rich landscapes, and it is also an important place for citizens to relax, recreate, and learn about local history and culture.

Historical Culture

The history of Beining Park can be traced back to the 32nd year of the Guangxu reign of the Qing Dynasty (1906), when Yuan Shikai, the Viceroy of Zhili, established the "Planting Garden" here to promote the New Policies, introducing various plants and combining experimental and ornamental functions. During the Republic of China period, the park was gradually expanded, with pavilions, terraces, and towers added, and was renamed "Hebei Park," becoming an important public activity space in northern Tianjin.

After the founding of New China, the park underwent multiple renovations, and in 1958 it was officially named "Beining Park." In 1985, construction began on the park's landmark building, Zhiyuan Pagoda, which was completed in 1989 and became the park's cultural landmark. As a representative of modern Tianjin gardens, Beining Park has witnessed the city's development and changes. The historical buildings and garden layout preserved in the park reflect the gardening techniques and aesthetic styles of different periods and possess important historical and cultural value.

Main Attractions

Zhiyuan Pagoda

Zhiyuan Pagoda is the landmark building of Beining Park. It is located in the central part of the park, stands 74.24 meters tall, and has 9 stories. It is an octagonal antique-style brick pagoda in the form of a pavilion. Its name is taken from the phrase "tranquility yields transcendence." The pagoda body is decorated with exquisite painted patterns and reliefs, demonstrating the superb craftsmanship of traditional Chinese architecture. Visitors can climb the pagoda and look far into the distance, taking in the panoramic view of the park and the surrounding urban landscape. Inside the pagoda, there are murals and exhibits displaying Tianjin's history and culture, with different themes on each floor, presenting Tianjin's development process from different perspectives.

Nine-Turn Bridge

The Nine-Turn Bridge is located in the central water area of the park, connecting the island in the lake with the shore. It is named for its winding shape and nine turns, with a total length of about 100 meters. The bridge body is made of stone, with railings on both sides, and the posts are carved with patterns such as stone lions, making it exquisite in shape. Strolling on the bridge, visitors can enjoy the scene of boats coming and going on the lake and weeping willows along the shore. It is a popular spot in the park for photography and sightseeing. At the end of the bridge is the island in the lake, which is shaded by green trees and equipped with seats for visitors to rest.

Deyue Pavilion

Deyue Pavilion is a classical waterside pavilion built beside the lake, with a building area of about 300 square meters. It adopts a traditional brick-and-wood structure, with upturned eaves and richly painted beams and pillars, featuring a typical Jiangnan garden architectural style. It was once a place for literati and poets to gather, and now serves as an exhibition hall, sometimes hosting cultural activities such as calligraphy and painting exhibitions. Because the pavilion platform is close to the water surface, on moonlit nights the moon's reflection in the water and the pavilion enhance each other, which is how the name "Deyue" came about. It is an excellent place in the park to enjoy water views and moonlight.

Diecui Mountain

Diecui Mountain is an artificial rockery landscape in the park, covering an area of about 8,000 square meters and reaching a maximum height of about 15 meters. It was piled up from mud cleared from the lake bottom and stone materials. The mountain body is densely vegetated, with pines, cypresses, and shrubs distributed in a staggered manner, remaining evergreen throughout the year, hence the name "Diecui." There are winding stone-step paths in the mountain connecting to the viewing pavilion at the summit. Ascending to the top, visitors can overlook the park's lake, pavilions, and other landscapes, with a broad field of vision. It is a good place for tourists to climb for fitness and enjoy leisure views.
