The Shenzhen Overseas Chinese Town Tourist Resort is located in Nanshan District, Shenzhen, Guangdong Province. It is one of China's first batch of 5A-rated tourist attractions, one of the first batch of National Civilized Scenic Spots, and a National Cultural Industry Demonstration Park.
Covering an area of 4.8 square kilometers, the resort brings together China's most concentrated cluster of cultural theme parks, cultural theme hotels, and cultural art facilities. It features four large cultural theme parks—Splendid China, China Folk Culture Village, Window of the World, and Happy Valley—as well as more than 20 cultural, entertainment, and leisure supporting facilities, including art museums, art centers, a tourism college, public leisure parks, and various levels of resort hotels.
History and Culture
When Overseas Chinese Town was first established, it set its sights on tourism. While other places were busy constructing buildings, OCT focused on planting trees and grass and improving the surrounding environment. In 1989, OCT launched Splendid China, China's first theme park, in Shenzhen.
In 2003, Shenzhen implemented a "culture-oriented city" strategy. The OCT-LOFT Creative Cultural District, formerly the Eastern Industrial Zone, was gradually transformed from "three-plus-one" trading/manufacturing factory buildings into a LOFT creative industry park. The transformation was completed in 2006, and the Shenzhen OCT-LOFT Creative Cultural Park was officially established.
After years of development, the OCT Group became the only Asian enterprise to rank among the world's top eight tourism groups. It has built a full industrial chain covering cultural tourism, cultural festivals, cultural performances, cultural technology, cultural arts, cultural theme hotels, and cultural product manufacturing.
Major Attractions
Happy Valley
Shenzhen Happy Valley is a new-generation large theme park under the OCT Group, and one of the country's first 5A-rated tourist attractions. It covers a total area of 350,000 square meters with a total investment of RMB 1.5 billion. Combining sea, land, and air amusement experiences, and blending daytime and nighttime entertainment, it features eight themed zones—including Spain Square, Cartoon City, and Adventure Mountain—as well as the fascinating Maya Water Park. It offers over 100 recreational activities suitable for all ages. Many rides are introduced from the United States, the Netherlands, Germany, and other developed countries, including the world's highest-drop "Rapid River" and China's first suspended roller coaster "Snow Mountain Flying Dragon."
Splendid China
Splendid China is currently the world's largest and most content-rich live-action miniature scenic area, covering 450 mu (about 30 hectares). It is divided into two sections: the main attraction area and the comprehensive service area. In the attraction area, nearly 100 scenic spots are arranged roughly according to China's regional map, presenting a microcosm of China's natural scenery and cultural-historical essence. Visitors can experience 5,000 years of Chinese history and travel across the country's magnificent landscapes in a single day. The comprehensive service area draws on the architectural and garden artistry of Suzhou and retains the characteristics of traditional Chinese commercial streets.
Window of the World
Window of the World is dedicated to promoting global culture, bringing together world wonders, historical relics, famous landscapes, and folk song-and-dance performances in one park, creating a wonderful and fascinating world. The scenic area is divided according to the five continents, and together with the World Square, World Sculpture Garden, International Street, and Jurassic Land, it forms a man-made theme park of diverse and exquisite sights. It contains 118 attractions, each freely replicated at different scales, delicate and lifelike.
China Folk Culture Village
China Folk Culture Village is the country's first large-scale cultural tourist attraction that brings together the folk arts, customs, and residential architecture of various ethnic groups. It covers an area of 200,000 square meters. Featuring "twenty-five villages and the customs of fifty-six ethnic groups," visitors can experience the folk cultures and lifestyles of China's ethnic minorities, earning it the reputation of "China's Folk Museum."
