History and Culture
Fenjiezhou Island has a long history. It was originally named "Fenjie Ridge" and "Ma'an Ridge"; later, because it is located at the border between Wanning City and Lingshui County, it was called "Fenjiezhou." It is not only the dividing line between the northern and southern climates of Hainan, but also an important cultural dividing line between the areas of ethnic minorities such as the Li, Miao, and Hui on Hainan Island and the Han areas. It was the boundary between Qiongzhou Prefecture to the north and Yazhou Prefecture to the south in old times, and has also been the administrative boundary between Lingshui County and Wanning City through the ages.
