Yuyin Shanfang (Yuyin Garden)

Yuyin Shanfang is located on North Street, Nancun Town, Panyu District, Guangzhou City, Guangdong Province. It is a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit, a National 4A-Level Tourist Attraction, and one of the Four Famous Gardens of Guangdong. Originally built in the Qing Dynasty, it is a typical private Lingnan garden, covering an area of 1,598 square metres. The garden is renowned for its exquisitely compact design and ingenious layout. Within its limited space, it employs traditional gardening techniques to integrate pavilions, terraces, halls, mountains, waterscapes, bridges, corridors, flowers, trees, and stone carvings, embodying the Lingnan gardening philosophy of "reducing grandeur to miniaturisation." The architecture features extensive use of Lingnan traditional crafts such as brick carving, wood carving, plaster moulding, and ceramic sculpture, and preserves a large number of actual residential architectural remains from the Qing Dynasty. It is an important physical site for the study of classical Lingnan garden architecture.

History and Culture

Yuyin Shanfang was built under the direction of Wu Bin, a native of Nancun, Panyu, during the Qing Dynasty. After passing the imperial examination at the provincial level, he served as a secretary in the Grand Secretariat. Upon retiring from office and returning to his hometown, he named the garden "Yuyin" (meaning "remaining shade") to commemorate his ancestors' blessings, implying that their virtue would be passed down to later generations. Construction began in the sixth year of the Tongzhi reign (1867) and was completed in the tenth year (1871), taking four years in total.

Initially, the garden was a private family garden of the Wu clan, where descendants lived for generations. Over time, the garden suffered from building damage and ageing components. In 1989, it was listed as a Guangdong Provincial Cultural Relic Protection Unit, after which authorities carried out multiple rounds of restoration to preserve the original architectural form and garden layout as much as possible. In 2001, the State Council designated it as a National Key Cultural Relic Protection Unit. The site fully preserves the gardening concepts of Qing-dynasty private Lingnan gardens, and retains numerous couplets and carvings that embody Lingnan clan culture and traditional architectural craftsmanship.

Main Attractions

Shenliu Tang (Deep Willow Hall)

Shenliu Tang is the main hall of Yuyin Shanfang, serving as the owner's reception and banquet venue, and is the core building of the garden. The hall has a three-bay facade, with exquisite wood carvings. Inside, it retains partition screens made of rosewood and mahogany, carved with floral and bird patterns as well as calligraphy. In front of the hall is an open terrace adjacent to a lotus pond, surrounded by planted flowers and trees. The architecture and waterscape complement each other, making it a representative example of Lingnan hall architecture.

Linchi Bieguan (Lakeside Study)

Located on the opposite bank of the lotus pond, facing Shenliu Tang across the water, Linchi Bieguan was formerly a study where the owner read and rested. The building is built close to the pond, with windows opening towards the water for a broad view. Planted with flowers and trees around, it uses the pond to create a quiet and serene reading environment, reflecting the characteristic Lingnan study design of being waterside.

Linglong Shui Xie (Exquisite Waterside Pavilion)

Situated in the centre of a pond on the eastern side of the garden, this is an octagonal waterside pavilion with windows on all eight sides, surrounded by water. It offers panoramic views of the surrounding scenery and is an excellent spot for sightseeing. Formerly used by the owner for enjoying the cool and viewing landscapes, it is planted with aquatic plants and trees around, and its reflection in the water creates a classic garden scene.

Huanhong Kualv Langqiao (Red-Green Covered Bridge)

This covered bridge spans the central lotus pond and is an iconic structure of Yuyin Shanfang. It divides the garden into eastern and western parts. Pomegranate trees are planted on one side and banana plants on the other, giving it the name "Huanhong Kualv" (literally "washing red and crossing green"). The bridge is topped with a roofed corridor that provides shade and shelter from rain. Walking on the bridge, visitors can enjoy the lotus flowers in the pond, achieving a harmonious integration of bridge, corridor, water, and plants, and serving as a classic example of Lingnan garden covered bridges.

Yu Yuan (Yu Garden – also known as the Young Ladies' Tower)

Yu Yuan is an auxiliary courtyard of Yuyin Shanfang, formerly the residential quarters for the women of the Wu family. It is a Lingnan residential compound, consisting of a multi-storey building with living quarters, a study, and viewing terraces. The compact layout includes a small courtyard and an inner patio, recreating the living environment of women from wealthy Lingnan households in the old days.

Wenchang Ge (Wenchang Pavilion)

The pavilion stands 15.4 metres tall, with an octagonal appearance and a spatial design that appears to have four storeys but actually contains three. The ceiling features a caisson adorned with finely painted figures, flowers, birds, animals, and landscapes, rendered with exquisite detail and vivid charm. The corridor ceilings on both sides are also decorated with colourful murals depicting local Panyu customs and inspiring连环画 (sequential narrative paintings), offering visitors a sense of enlightenment.
