History and Culture

Zengcuo'an has a long history, originally an indigenous fishing village along the Minnan coast. Since the Tang and Song dynasties, fishermen have settled here, making their living from fishing and aquaculture. It is one of the oldest fishing villages on Xiamen Island, with over a thousand years of fishing heritage, preserving intact Minnan fishing folk customs. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, the village gradually took on a stable layout, with traditional Minnan residences and ancestral halls built one after another, becoming an important fishing community in southern Xiamen. Due to its coastal location, it also served as a small hub for coastal defense and trade, accumulating a deep maritime cultural heritage.

Zengcuo'an is a place where multiple religions coexist. Within its area, there are Buddhist, Taoist, Christian, and folk belief sites. The coexistence of diverse faiths in one village exemplifies the pluralistic religious culture of Minnan and is a key cultural feature of the area. In modern times, Zengcuo'an underwent a transformation from a traditional fishing village to an artistic and creative block, retaining the lively atmosphere of the old fishing community while incorporating contemporary art and tourism elements, making it a landmark of fishing village cultural transition in Xiamen.

As an important carrier of Minnan culture, Zengcuo'an preserves fishing customs, traditional building techniques, and distinctive food culture. It represents a model of Xiamen's local culture integrated with coastal tourism and serves as a prime destination for visitors to experience authentic Minnan fishing village life.
