Features: The compilation of New Chinese Language Reader is conducted as an academic endeavor. Whether it is the selection of texts, the arrangement system, or the writing of reading suggestions, our educational philosophy and the pursuit of secondary school Chinese language pedagogy are thoroughly integrated. The name "New Chinese Language" is chosen to highlight the consciousness and experimental nature of this pursuit. New Chinese Language Reader is designed to be compatible with the current teaching system, divided into two parts for junior high and senior high schools. It establishes a progressive reading system based on the gradual characteristics and needs of students' learning and comprehension of language, as well as the development of their psychological, emotional, and intellectual aspects, alongside the stages of spiritual growth.
The "new" in "New Chinese Language" represents several explorations. First, the guiding principle—educational philosophy of Chinese language education. We believe a person's Chinese literacy directly stems from their practical experience in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Among these, reading is fundamental and pivotal. True reading is a dialogue with the author's mind. Therefore, this reader does not follow the logical order of language knowledge and reading-writing knowledge that previous similar readers adhered to. Instead, it selects works based on the different characteristics and needs of psychological development at various stages of adolescents' growth. The selected works are primarily not examples of language or reading-writing knowledge, but bridges for readers to engage in dialogue with outstanding thinkers, writers, and scientists from ancient and modern times.
Through this bridge, we hope to move beyond the relatively narrow spiritual cave and embrace the light and shadows of world civilization, appreciate the spiritual essence of the Chinese nation, feel the pulsation of great minds from the text, explore the mysteries of the linguistic world, and at the same time, lay a solid foundation for both Chinese language proficiency and humanistic spirit.
