Features: The compilation of "New Chinese Reader" is conducted as an academic endeavor. Whether in the selection of texts, the arrangement system, or the writing of reading suggestions, our educational philosophy and pursuit of secondary school Chinese language education are evident throughout. The name "New Chinese" is chosen to highlight the consciousness and experimental nature of this pursuit. "New Chinese Reader" is designed to align with the current teaching system, divided into junior high and high school sections. Following the gradual stages of students' learning and comprehension of language, as well as their psychological, emotional, and intellectual development, as well as the needs of spiritual growth, a progressive reading system is established.
The "newness" of "New Chinese" is explored in the following aspects. First, the guiding principles for compilation—the concept of Chinese language education. We believe that an individual's Chinese literacy directly stems from their practical experience in reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Among these, reading is foundational and pivotal. True reading is a dialogue with the author's mind. Therefore, this reader does not follow the logical order of linguistic knowledge and reading/writing knowledge as observed in previous similar readers. Instead, it selects works based on the varying psychological development and needs of adolescents at different age stages. The selected works are primarily intended not as examples of linguistic knowledge or reading/writing techniques, but as bridges for readers to engage in dialogue with outstanding thinkers, writers, and scientists from all over the world. Through this bridge, we hope to move beyond the relatively narrow confines of spiritual caves, embrace the brilliance of global civilization, appreciate the spiritual essence of the Chinese nation, and sense the pulse of great minds, explore the mysteries of the language world, while also laying a solid foundation for Chinese language education and humanistic spirit.
