Features: For thousands of years, the defining characteristic of Chinese painting has been brush and ink. The artist's temperament, personality, aspirations, and techniques are all expressed through brush and ink. Without the traditional brush-and-ink style, there can be no real Chinese painting. In the context of Chinese painting, brush and ink itself is an art—a beauty with a relatively independent artistic essence. As the master Huang Binhong once said, "Those who excel in painting build their foundation on the brush and achieve greatness with ink." The contemporary renowned painter Zhang Jingcheng is an artist who reveres classical aesthetic spirit and has a deep preference for traditional brush-and-ink techniques. From the process of forming his artistic language, it is evident that his success is entirely due to his profound traditional painting skills and unique artistic expression. He takes ancient figures as his subjects, employs traditional brush-and-ink as his means of expression, and draws on the lyrical qualities of literati painting to seek endless poetic inspiration from classical poetry. He skillfully blends different painting genres—such as landscapes and figures—into a single composition, presenting a fresh artistic style where humans and landscapes intertwine, creating a harmonious fusion of scene and emotion, which has garnered widespread attention. Zhang Jingcheng, styled Kaishi, is also known as Jingchan Jushi. Born in 1962, he is from Licheng, Jinan, Shandong. He graduated from the Fine Arts Department of Taihan University in 1983, completed the postgraduate program at the Central Academy of Fine Arts in 1992, and studied in the advanced creative program at Wang Mingming's studio at the Beijing Art Institute from 2002 to 2004. He is currently a member of the China Artists Association, a full-time painter at the Qingdao Oil Painting Institute, and a first-class national fine arts master. His works primarily depict Buddhist and Taoist figures as well as literati scholars, with a refined and ethereal style. The Zen-like insights are vividly captured in his paintings. Many of his works have been collected by professional organizations or collectors, while some have been selected by the China Artists Association for exhibitions in Western Europe. He has held two solo exhibitions at the National Art Museum of China. His artistic biography has been included in numerous dictionaries, such as The Eastern Elite, Who's Who of Chinese Artists, World Biographical Encyclopedia, and One Hundred Masters of Chinese Figure Painting. He has published works such as Techniques of a Renowned Contemporary Painter: Zhang Jingcheng's Freehand Figures and Famous Artists and Masterpieces: Zhang Jingcheng's Freehand Figure Works.
