1. If the spelling and pronunciation of a term are not unique, they are listed simultaneously. For example, cheque (= [AmE] check) indicates that in American English, the word is spelled as check. After the phonetic transcription, the part of speech is noted. If a word has several different parts of speech, each part of speech is prefixed with a bold Roman numeral. Part-of-speech symbols are italicized. After nouns, U and C are used to indicate uncountable and countable nouns, respectively. If a word can be both countable and uncountable, no notation is made.
2. Font In this book, entries are in bold black type. "Analysis," "Collocations," "Grammar," "Typical Test Questions," "Key Points," etc., are enclosed in solid fish-tailed brackets []. Symbolic notations are in white italics. The rest are in white regular type.
3. Symbols Parentheses ( ): (1) Indicate special plural forms of nouns, countability and uncountability of nouns. (2) Indicate optional letters, phonetic transcriptions, or words within parentheses. (3) Used to mark inflectional forms. (4) Used to add habitual collocations after verbs, etc. (5) Used to add supplementary explanations for the meaning and examples in annotations. Slash /: (1) Phonetic transcriptions are filled within the two bars. (2) Separates multiple acceptable spellings. (3) Indicates that the content before and after can be interchanged. Solid fish-tailed brackets []: Indicate special topics listed under a noun entry. Tilde ~~: Used in examples and idioms to represent the headword.
4. Sequence The following sequences are used in this book: Level: I, II, III indicate the part-of-speech category. Second Level: ①, ②, ③ indicate the sense category.
