■ Overall Introduction New Interchange, one of the most popular and influential English textbooks internationally, summarizes eight years of classroom teaching experience and improves the original Interchange through extensive solicitation of opinions from students and teachers. The main revisions include: adding new conversation exercises (Conversations), new cultural snippets (Snapshots), new reading exercises (Readings), more comprehensive grammar explanations and exercises (GrammarFocusmodelsandactivities), and richer listening materials. At the same time, the teacher's book, workbook, and video content have also been extensively revised. New Interchange is a large-scale English textbook written for learners in non-English-speaking countries. The content of the textbook includes listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills, as well as pronunciation training and vocabulary expansion. It particularly emphasizes the development of listening and speaking skills. The primary goal of this textbook is to cultivate English communicative competence, that is, the ability to flexibly use English according to communicative contexts, purposes, and audiences. The textbook primarily uses American English, but its content is not limited to any particular country, region, or culture; instead, it reflects the richness and diversity of English as an international language of communication. This textbook is divided into four levels: Beginner, Level 1, Level 2, and Level 3.
Beginner Level: Designed for "true" beginners with no English foundation, it explains basic grammar structures, vocabulary, and language functions. Upon completion of this level, learners can master 1,000 active vocabulary words.
Level 1: Targeted at learners with a basic level of English, it aims to further develop grammar, vocabulary, and pragmatic skills, enabling learners to reach a pre-intermediate to intermediate level. Upon completion of this level, learners can master 2,200 active vocabulary words.
Level 2: Targeted at learners with a pre-intermediate level of English, it aims to further develop grammar, vocabulary, and pragmatic skills, enabling learners to reach an intermediate level. Upon completion of this level, learners can master 3,400 active vocabulary words.
Level 3: Targeted at learners with an intermediate level of English, it aims to cultivate learners' ability to communicate in relatively fluent and accurate English. Upon completion of this level, learners can master 4,700 active vocabulary words.
This textbook, through a large number of inspiring and challenging exercises, enables students to further consolidate and develop their ability to communicate in English. In addition to applied skill exercises, the textbook also designs various advanced discourse comprehension exercises. Listening exercises include: listening to narratives, listening to advertisements, listening to discussions, and listening to interviews. Reading activities include: cross-cultural communication themes, lifestyle themes, themes of different values, and other authentic reading passages. Upon completing all four levels, learners can reach an intermediate to advanced level.
