Yunnan Nationalities Village is located by the shores of Dianchi Lake in Xishan District, Kunming City, Yunnan Province, about 8 kilometers from the city center. It is a national 4A-level tourist attraction. The scenic area covers an area of 1,270 mu (approximately 847,000 square meters) and consists of 26 ethnic minority village clusters, an ethnic song and dance hall, an ethnic square, and more. It is a grand cultural garden integrating the history, culture, folk customs, architectural art, and religious beliefs of various ethnic groups in Yunnan. The buildings within the scenic area are all constructed at a 1:1 ratio based on the traditional dwellings of each ethnic group, with more than 600 residential buildings, showcasing typical ethnic architectural styles such as Dai bamboo houses, Yi earthen flat-roofed houses, and Miao stilted houses. It is known as the "epitome of Yunnan's ethnic culture."
History and Culture
Yunnan Nationalities Village officially opened in 1992, aiming to protect and showcase Yunnan's rich ethnic minority culture. Yunnan is the province with the largest number of ethnic minorities in China, with 25 indigenous ethnic minorities. Through immersive architecture, folk performances, handicraft demonstrations, and other forms, the village systematically presents the production and daily life of various ethnic groups. For example, traditional festivals such as the Dai Water-Splashing Festival, the Yi Torch Festival, and the Naxi Sanduo Festival are regularly performed in the scenic area; intangible cultural heritage such as the Wa wooden drum dance and the Hani polyphonic folk songs are also kept alive through live performances. In addition, the ethnic museum within the scenic area houses thousands of ethnic artifacts, including clothing, musical instruments, and production tools, recording the historical changes of various ethnic groups.
Main Attractions
Dai Village
The village centers on Dai-style bamboo houses and includes a Buddhist temple, a water-splashing square, and an open-air museum. The bamboo house has two floors: the lower floor is used for livestock, and the upper floor is for living, reflecting the Dai people's "stilt-style" architectural characteristics. Every day at 14:00 and 16:00, there is a water-splashing carnival activity, and visitors can participate in experiencing the Dai New Year custom.
Yi Village
It includes residential communities of Yi branches such as the Sani, Axi, and Limi, mainly featuring earthen flat-roofed houses and "one seal" architecture. The "Solar Calendar Square" in the village displays sculptures of the Yi calendar. Every evening at 19:30, there is the "Axi Jumping Moon" bonfire party, showcasing Yi song and dance as well as marriage customs.
Naxi Village
Modeled on a traditional Naxi village in Lijiang, it features "three rooms and one screen wall" residences, the Dongba Culture Square, and the Naxi Museum. Visitors can watch Dongba script writing and Naxi ancient music performances, and learn about the Naxi people's ecological philosophy of "harmonious coexistence between humanity and nature."
Ethnic Song and Dance Hall
A large performance venue with a capacity of 1,200 people. Every day at 15:00, the ethnic song and dance show "Call of the Plateau" is staged, integrating the dance essence of 25 ethnic groups, with a performance duration of about 60 minutes.
Ethnic Square
Covering an area of 20,000 square meters, it is the core area for large-scale festival activities held in the scenic area. In the center of the square stands the 18-meter-high "Ethnic Unity Column."
