It is distributed in a north-south direction overall, and the lake body is bow-shaped. The shoreline is 199.5 kilometers long, the average depth is 5 meters, the maximum depth is 8 meters, the water storage capacity is about 1.3 billion cubic meters, the total area is 309.5 square kilometers, and the total basin area is 2,920 square kilometers. Dianchi Lake is also one of the country's three major key protected lakes. Its basin ecosystem types are diverse and species diversity is rich, representing the basic characteristics of the biodiversity composition of the Central Yunnan Plateau.
Historical Culture
Dianchi Lake was called Dianchi Ze and Diannan Ze in ancient times, and is also known as Kunming Lake, Kunming Chi, Dianhai, and so on. Regarding the origin of its name, one theory is that because the Panlong River flowing in from upstream is wide and deep, while the Tanglang River outlet downstream is narrow and shallow, it is like a river flowing backward, taking the meaning of inversion, and therefore it is called Dianchi. Another theory is that "Dian" is a variation of the Yi language word "die (dian)," meaning a large basin. The shores of Dianchi Lake are one of the largest basins in Yunnan, hence the name.
The Dianchi Lake area has a long history. In the Neolithic Age, residents of the Dianchi Lake area lived around the lake and made a living by fishing, leaving behind the "shell mound sites" with the richest research content. More than two thousand years ago, a splendid bronze culture arose centered on Dianchi Lake. Academically, the bronze culture that appeared in the Dianchi Lake area from the Warring States period to the Eastern Han period is customarily called "Dian culture." Dianchi Lake also has a long history of shipping. The Yuan dynasty poet Wang Sheng described the prosperous scene of Yunjin Wharf in the southeast of Kunming City at that time in "Ode to Dianchi Lake."

It starts from the mouth of the Panlong River entering the lake in the east and faces Xishan in the west. It is 3.5 kilometers long and stretches across Dianchi Lake.
