In 1968, he became a disciple of the famous pingshu (storytelling) artist Li Xinquan to study pingshu performance. He has created and performed short pingshu pieces such as "Underwater Green Pine" and "Standing on the Wind Cloud," participating in and winning awards at various amateur performances in Beijing. For his achievements in narrating modern history pingshu, experts such as Wang Jingshou, Wang Jue, and Zeng Huijie wrote in the book "The Integration of Eastern Culture": "In the section 'Commentary by Renowned Artists' of the book 'On Chinese Pingshu Art,' it is stated: 'Tian Zhanyi is the most accomplished performer of modern history pingshu in recent years.'"
The pingshu "Comprehensive Mirror of Ancient and Modern Times" is adapted from the classical Chinese novels "Three Words" (including "Allusions to Worldly Wisdom," "Admonitions for the World," and "A Waking World"). After years of research and performance practice, the renowned pingshu artist Tian Zhanyi recorded this collection of short pingshu, processing, organizing, and adapting it based on historical materialism, with new ideas, perspectives, and techniques. The collection consists of five stories, totaling 70 chapters, with a runtime of over 35 hours. It was once broadcast on the radio and received unanimous praise from a broad audience. It is an excellent work that promotes national cultural arts and inherits and develops cultural heritage.
