Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park

Tianmen Mountain National Forest Park is located 8 kilometers south of the urban area of Zhangjiajie City, Hunan Province. It is a mountain-type natural scenic area. It is a Global Geopark, a National Forest Park, and a National 5A-level Tourist Attraction. The park covers a total area of 96 square kilometers, with the mountaintop area reaching 2 square kilometers and the main peak at an altitude of 1,518.6 meters. Its primitive secondary forest coverage rate reaches 90%, and it is rich in germplasm resources. Tianmen Mountain is named after the natural wonder Tianmen Cave. The mountain body is at an altitude of 1,350-1,500 meters. Geologically, it is a complete syncline structural unit, with typically developed mid-mountain karst platform peak forest and canyon landforms. On the mountain are karst platform cliff landscapes, and at the foot of the mountain are karst peak forest and canyon landscapes. Throughout the mountain, karst hills, stone buds, depressions, funnels, and karst caves are widely distributed. It is distinguished from the sandstone peak forest landscape of Wulingyuan by its relatively complete development of karst landforms, and it is a platform-shaped isolated mountain. This area has a subtropical mountain-type monsoon humid climate. The daily temperature is about 6-8 degrees lower than that of the urban area, and the sunshine duration is 12-14 hours. Due to differences in altitude and temperature, the four seasons on Tianmen Mountain have become two seasons.

Historical Culture

Tianmen Mountain was called Songliang Mountain in ancient times. During the Three Kingdoms period, the cliff of Songliang Mountain suddenly opened into a cave, bright and clear like a gate, forming the rare world wonder to this day — Tianmen Cave. Emperor Sun Xiu of Wu considered this an auspicious sign, so he renamed Songliang Mountain Tianmen Mountain and established Tianmen Commandery at the foot of the mountain, which is today's Zhangjiajie City.

According to records, from the 18th year of the Qianlong reign of the Qing Dynasty (1753) to the 5th year of the Republic of China (1916), over a period of 163 years, Tianmen Mountain was repaired and renovated 7 times. It was the center of Buddhism in western Hunan and the highest-altitude Buddhist architectural complex in Hunan Province. In 2002, Tianmen Mountain Temple was rebuilt and opened to the public on June 9, 2009.

For thousands of years, the successive emergence of six unsolved mysteries — "Tianmen Cave Opening, Tianmen Water Turning, Tianmen Turning Direction, Yefu Hiding Treasure, Ghost Valley Manifesting Shadow, and Tianmen Auspicious Beast" — has added mysterious and extraordinary interest to this place.
