Author Bio: Professor Zhang Houcan (born April 1927, in Nanpi County, Hebei Province, Han ethnicity) graduated from the Department of Psychology at Fu Ren University in 1948 and remained there to teach. Currently, she is a professor, doctoral supervisor, and member of the university council at the Department of Psychology, Beijing Normal University. She also holds multiple important positions, including Consultant to the State Council, Member of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, Standing Council Member of the Chinese Psychological Society, Member of the Discipline Evaluation Committee of the National Education Science Planning Commission, Vice President of the Educational Examination Research Association, and Vice President of the International Union of Psychological Science (IUPsyS).
Professor Zhang has been engaged in teaching and research in psychology for over fifty years, with main research areas including experimental psychology, human cognition, and psychological and educational measurement. She is highly innovative and a leading figure in Chinese psychology. In 1982, she first introduced cognitive psychology to China. She has achieved outstanding accomplishments in research fields such as "Chinese character recognition," "cognitive styles," and the "PDP model." She is widely recognized as a foundational figure in Chinese psychology. In the field of psychological statistics and testing, she edited China's earliest textbook on "Psychology and Educational Statistics," pioneered the course "Psychological Measurement," and applied theories of psychological statistics and testing to revise the "Wechsler Children's Intelligence Scale," develop the "Raven Standard Progressive Matrices," and create the "Chinese Children's Development Scale." These scales have been widely used and highly regarded in Chinese society. In the mid-1980s, she led China's research on the measurement of college entrance examinations, contributing significantly to educational reform. In recent years, she has focused more on psychology serving society, conducting research on psychological assessment in civil service exams, professional qualification exams, and managerial evaluations, thereby strengthening psychology's social influence and expanding its application scope. She maintains extensive connections with international academia, engaging in numerous collaborative research projects and actively promoting cross-cultural research in psychology. She has hosted multiple international academic conferences, delivered keynote speeches, and gained a strong reputation in the field.
Professor Zhang is a rigorous scholar and an engaging teacher, having nurtured a large number of talented psychologists with excellent results and being recognized as an outstanding graduate supervisor. She has authored over ten works, including "Experimental Psychology," "Behaviorism Psychology," "A Concise Encyclopedia of Psychology," "Educational Dictionary—Volume on Educational Statistics," "Psychology and Educational Statistics—Textbook for Higher Education," "Cognitive Styles: An Experimental Study of a Personality Dimension," "The Great Encyclopedia of China—Volume on Psychology," and "Psychology Dictionary," among others. She has also published numerous academic papers in both Chinese and English. In recognition of her achievements and contributions, she has been honored with titles such as "Beijing March 8th" (March 8th Red Banner Hand) and "Advanced Worker of Beijing Municipality," received the "Zeng Xianzi Higher Education Teaching Award," and been included in the "World" (World) of the American Biographical Society and the Cambridge Biographical Society in the UK.
