Great Dictionary · Linguistics Volume

Features: The "Great Dictionary" is a large-scale comprehensive dictionary. Its publication fills a gap in Chinese lexicography. To date, "The Cihai" is the only large-scale comprehensive dictionary in China. It includes both single characters and common words, as well as specialized terms across various fields, serving the functions of both a general language dictionary and a specialized dictionary. With rich entries, convenient retrieval, and strong practicality, it has been widely favored by readers. With the accelerating pace of human knowledge accumulation and innovation, and the improvement of China's cultural literacy, many readers with higher educational backgrounds have raised higher demands for the use of "The Cihai." Therefore, while continuing to compile new editions of "The Cihai" to meet the needs of the times, it is necessary to compile a larger-scale, more comprehensive, and richer dictionary than "The Cihai." The compilation of "The Great Dictionary" is based on "The Cihai," inheriting its strengths and expanding them, with a focus on adding new fields and terms/meanings in various disciplines that have not been covered in "The Cihai," while appropriately filling in gaps. The entire dictionary contains approximately 250,000 entries and is about 50 million words, more than twice that of "The Cihai." It is compiled and published in volumes according to subject categories.
1. This volume includes over 3,300 entries on linguistics and philology, with a selection scope covering: traditional Chinese linguistics and philology, foreign linguistics, major languages and their phylogenetic classifications worldwide, Chinese and foreign linguists and their works, and related language regulations.
2. This volume is organized into categories such as general linguistics, language families, linguistics figures, and works/documents.
3. For entries with multiple names or translators, the most common name is used as the main entry, while other names are listed as cross-references. Cross-references do not include explanations but note the main entry they refer to.
4. Foreign names included as main entries (except for those from countries like North Korea, South Korea, Japan, and Vietnam) are generally accompanied by their foreign names. Foreign names mentioned in the explanations that are not listed as main entries in this volume are, where possible, followed by their foreign surnames and birth/death years. Those already listed as main entries are no longer repeated.
5. This volume includes a table of contents and a classified index of entries at the beginning, and a stroke index of entries at the end.
