Features: "In terms of literature, Mr. Cai's book can only be considered mediocre. But, it is a mine, towering like a mountain, with lush forests, flowing springs and waterfalls, containing coal, iron, gold, and jade. Naturally, there is also soil, and inconspicuous sand and stones. Its extraordinary quality lies in its rich reserves. As mentioned earlier, it was not born out of obedience to orders or reviews, but emerged in time. During the collapse of the feudal system and the turmoil of the new era, Mr. Cai devoted his life to composing this epic, which can be heard as a dirge or seen as a symbol of the birth of the new era. From a practical perspective, its vitality is still growing. How many people today can still read the traditional Chinese character editions of the 24 Histories? Not many, not even the simplified character versions of classical Chinese. But our national history must be inherited and continued. Reading Mr. Cai's book can guide you into the world of history, and there is no other like it. In this sense, his achievement is truly remarkable." The famous historian and novelist of the Republic of China, Cai Dongfan, with the aim of "saving the nation through romance," spent ten years writing The Popular Romance of the Chinese Dynasties. Starting from Qin Shi Huang and ending in 1928, it comprehensively records the 2,166 years of Chinese feudal history, gaining fame for its rich content and authoritative sources, and was highly favored by readers. The writing style of this series combines the Romance of the Three Kingdoms with Mao Zonggang's annotations, featuring main text, annotations, and overall summaries, all self-annotated by Cai Dongfan. Through these annotations, he either refutes related fantastical claims, notes the sources and differences of certain historical materials, provides popular explanations for ancient official systems, laws, geography, artifacts, titles, and even dialects and colloquialisms, or praises or criticizes certain characters, thereby helping readers understand the main text and clarify historical facts. In the selection and use of historical materials, Cai Dongfan primarily relied on "official histories," supplemented by unofficial records and anecdotes, with all such sources requiring collateral evidence and being "carefully verified" to ensure accuracy. Due to Cai Dongfan's strong emphasis on historical authenticity and opposition to fictional inventions, this romance, though popular, holds significant historical value. The Romance of the Western Jin Dynasty is one of The Popular Romance of the Chinese Dynasties. The Western Jin Dynasty (265–316) began in 256 AD when Sima Yan replaced the Wei Dynasty to establish the Jin Dynasty, with its capital in Luoyang, known as the Western Jin. At its peak, the Western Jin's territory extended west to the Kunlun Mountains and southeast to the sea, while its northern border reached the Yan Mountains. The Western Jin inherited the decline from prolonged chaos, though some reforms were made, the rise of the feudal aristocracy and the power of regional military governors led to the "Eight Princes' Rebellion" shortly after the death of Emperor Wu of Jin, which lasted for 16 years. Eventually, the dynasty collapsed due to exhaustion and was conquered by the Later Han Dynasty. During its short 50 years, the Western Jin faced not only internal strife but also constant conflicts with northern ethnic minorities, keeping the country in perpetual internal and external turmoil, with little progress in political and economic development. This book consists of 100 chapters, outlining the history of the Western and Eastern Jin Dynasties for about 150 years, from the establishment of the Western Jin by Sima Yan (265 AD) to the replacement of the Jin Dynasty by Liu Yu (420 AD).
