Collected Annotations by Mao Zedong on Philosophy

Author: Compiled by the Documentation and Research Center of the CPC Central Committee
Publisher:
Publication Date: 1988-03-01
Features: During the Yan'an period and after the founding of the People's Republic of China, Mao Zedong read many philosophical works and wrote a large number of annotations. Some of them have been lost, while the annotations included in this collection are from his reading of ten books and one excerpt from his reading, most of which have been published for the first time. Mao Zedong's annotations are printed side by side with the corresponding passages from the original books. The original books were printed in vertical text, and the annotations were originally written vertically. They have now been converted to horizontal text. The annotations are printed in Song typeface, while the original text is printed in Fangsong typeface. Annotations written between the words and lines are kept in their original positions, while those written elsewhere on the page are generally placed on the left side of the page. Long passages of annotations and a few annotations that need to correspond are centered. Some annotations lack punctuation, and punctuation has been added during editing. The documents collected in this book, except for a few exceptions, are printed based on the original copies preserved by the Library Management Group of Mao Zedong's Former Residence and the Central Archives of the CPC Central Committee. The dates when Mao Zedong made annotations to each book are indicated on the first page of the annotations for each book where they are available. In some cases, the dates are not recorded, and the dates have been estimated based on the content of the annotations or the versions of the books read. These estimated dates are noted on the first page of the annotations for each book. A few items do not have a specified reading date.
