Features: During the writing process of this textbook, extensive experience from successful teaching systems in foreign animal breeding was widely absorbed, and the strengths of various versions of animal breeding textbooks in China were comprehensively inherited. A teaching system suitable for China's conditions was formed, combining both advanced and practical aspects to meet the needs of China's modernization and the cultivation of high-level talents. The entire textbook is arranged in 13 chapters. On one hand, the textbook maintains the basic content framework of traditional animal breeding, systematically introducing the fundamental principles and methods of animal breeding, including chapters on the origin and domestication of animals, selection principles and methods, individual genetic evaluation, hybrid breeding methods and the utilization of heterosis, as well as the breeding of breeds and lines. At the same time, many new research findings and methods have been added to the content, such as molecular biotechnology detection methods for qualitative traits and linear model methods for breeding value estimation. On the other hand, the textbook includes entirely new content such as the genetic principles of major traits in animals, methods for measuring production performance, breeding planning methods, the protection and utilization of breed resources, and the application of biotechnology in animal breeding. At the turn of the century, the authors of this book hope to organically combine inheritance and development to provide agricultural colleges across the country with a textbook featuring a completely new knowledge system. The content of the book includes: the origin, domestication, and breeds of animals; fundamentals of quantitative genetics; genetics of major traits in animals; production performance measurement; selection principles and methods, etc.
