Features: If reading and writing are the main ways and means to master cultural knowledge and improve humanistic literacy, serving as the foundation for scientific and technological and cultural and artistic pursuits, then sight-reading and ear-training are the essential content and skills for learning musical knowledge and enhancing musical literacy. For activities such as musical performance, composition, and research, sight-reading and ear-training are indispensable foundations and important components. This textbook is divided into two parts: the upper part focuses primarily on the study of basic musical knowledge, such as notation and score reading, while also providing theoretical preparation for developing skills like sight-reading and singing from scores. It does not cover fundamental music theory that is not particularly essential for learning sight-reading and ear-training, such as the nature of intervals, chord structures, and key relationships. The lower part emphasizes the learning of basic musical skills, such as reading and singing from scores, while allowing students to apply and reinforce the acquired musical knowledge through practical sight-reading exercises. This process transforms rational understanding into perceptual experience and validates rational understanding through perceptual experience, thereby creating a complementary relationship between sight-reading and ear-training. As a result, the sight-reading exercises selected for this textbook focus on mastering basic skills, and more challenging unison, two-part, and multi-part sight-reading exercises are not included.
The textbook primarily uses treble clef notation while also incorporating simplified notation. It focuses on Western major and minor-key music while also including traditional Chinese folk music. It primarily uses fixed-do solfège while also incorporating movable-do solfège. Sight-reading and ear-training are integrated organically, with a progressive and systematic layout, making it suitable for both professional music education and national music literacy education, as well as for teaching and self-study. This textbook is one of the series of achievements from the Hubei Provincial Department of Education research project "Standardization Research on Basic Music Education Textbooks" (Project No.: 2004Z001).
