Features: The "Academic Conference on Teaching Chinese as a Second Language" was held in Beijing on November 20-21, 2004. This conference was organized by the Center for Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages at Beijing Language and Culture University, a key research base for humanities and social sciences under the Ministry of Education. It is the center's third domestic academic conference on teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages, following the "International Academic Symposium on Chinese Learning and Cognition" held in October 2001 and the "International Academic Symposium on Chinese Language Teaching 2002" held in July 2002. The conference received 54 papers. Due to space limitations, this collection includes only 28 papers. Some papers that were accepted but had already been published earlier had to be omitted. These papers are roughly divided into four groups:
1. Macro-level discussions on teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages. The four papers by Cui Xiliang, Zhao Jinming, Lu Jianming, and Hu Mingyang discuss issues related to the basic research, applied research, and disciplinary development of teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages.
2. (Ontological research) focused on teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages. The 10 papers by Chen Changlai and others primarily discuss grammatical issues, while the remaining 4 papers address phonetics, vocabulary, and Chinese characters.
3. Theoretical research on teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages. The 5 papers by Li Fangjie and others cover topics such as textbook development, task-based teaching methods, and the Chinese Proficiency Test.
4. Research on second language acquisition of Chinese. The 5 papers by Wang Jianqin and others focus on issues such as the acquisition of Chinese characters and learning strategies.
This collection is titled "Comprehensive Exploration of Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages." On one hand, it summarizes the themes of the papers; on the other hand, it follows the naming convention of the "Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages Research Series" and reflects our new aspirations for research in teaching Chinese to speakers of other languages. This collection is the third volume in the "Teaching Chinese to Speakers of Other Languages Research Series" at Beijing Language and Culture University, edited by the editorial office of World Chinese Teaching. We extend our gratitude to Commercial Press for their strong support in the publication of this book.
