Features: This book is specifically compiled to implement the notice issued by the State Education Commission of China on establishing a writing proficiency grading system for primary and secondary schools in this city. It is a brush calligraphy practice workbook exclusively for students participating in the writing proficiency grading examination. Based on a fundamental grasp of brush regular script writing skills, students can learn the basic techniques of brush running script through careful reading and practice in this book. They can then utilize the acquired running script skills for preliminary calligraphy creation, thereby successfully passing the corresponding grade examination. This book also serves primary and secondary school students across the country, as well as individuals interested in learning brush calligraphy techniques, helping them enter the world of running script. It will benefit the implementation of writing education in primary and secondary schools nationwide and is particularly suitable for senior high schools offering calligraphy elective courses. According to the "Shanghai Municipal Primary and Secondary School Writing Proficiency Grading Examination Standards (Trial)" issued by the Shanghai Municipal Education Commission, the third and fourth grades include a "creation" examination requirement. Additionally, the fourth-grade "creation" section mandates that students "must be able to master one or two scripts or styles for creation, demonstrating a certain level of creativity and artistic expression." To address this, the book is divided into two major chapters: "Brush Running Script" and "Brush Calligraphy Creation," with a focus on running script. Each chapter consists of two parts: "Brief Teaching Materials" and "Copywriting Practice." Students can follow the model characters directly while reading the text. The brush running script practice involves copying the "Preface to the Orchid Pavilion" by Wang Xizhi, a renowned calligrapher from the Jin Dynasty. Wang Xizhi's contributions to the development of running script are widely admired, and his "Preface to the Orchid Pavilion" holds a significant position in the genre. For primary and secondary school students learning brush running script, using the "Preface to the Orchid Pavilion" as a model is an ideal learning path. Accordingly, the book includes running script knowledge, stroke techniques, structural principles, and practice exercises for partial characters, all guided by the "Preface to the Orchid Pavilion." Through practicing the "Preface to the Orchid Pavilion," students can solidly master the fundamental skills of running script.
Brush calligraphy creation practice is designed for the general practice of calligraphy among students, aiming to provide them with a preliminary understanding of calligraphy creation and encourage participation in basic calligraphy creation. Although only a small number of students (unrestricted by grade level) qualify for the fourth-grade examination and possess special calligraphy skills, they too have gradually grown and developed through basic calligraphy creation practice. Therefore, encouraging as many primary and secondary school students as possible to engage in calligraphy creation practice should be a key task of writing education in schools. Over the years, various children's brush calligraphy competition activities held across China have produced numerous talented young calligraphers, demonstrating that practical calligraphy creation practice contributes to the growth of a large number of calligraphy talents. Thus, we believe that brush calligraphy teaching, in addition to regular copywriting practice, should appropriately incorporate calligraphy creation exercises, which would greatly benefit the development of writing education and student growth. To this end, the book adopts a character collection approach, allowing students to choose and practice, with the hope of sparking their interest and fostering a desire for calligraphy creation.
Since brush calligraphy creation is a relatively new topic, and there are currently no specific, operational assessment standards for it in China, the book introduces a special article titled "Assessment and Scoring for Student Calligraphy Creation" for reference by teachers, students, and parents. This book was conceived and compiled by the Cultural Readings Editing Department of the Press.
