Features: This book is composed of 52 articles, roughly organized by content. There are many articles related to characters (Chinese characters), so they are placed at the beginning. Regarding language reform, from the 1950s to the 1970s, the author was a supporter of the romanization of Chinese. The article "Several Issues Concerning the Romanization of Chinese Characters," written in 1979, is a product of the author's reflections while attempting to design a near-ideal romanization scheme. As the author's understanding of Chinese characters deepened through teaching them, he gradually recognized that Chinese characters and the Chinese language are fundamentally compatible. For a period after 1959, the author attempted to study Peking Opera. He wrote several articles around Peking Opera, but only one related to language is included here. The relationship between language, characters, and culture is extremely close. Many articles in this book touch upon Chinese culture to varying degrees. The collation and organization of ancient texts have always been closely linked to the study of language and characters. It falls within the traditional scope of "Xiaoxue" (the study of the fundamentals of Chinese language and characters).
