Divergence and Integration of Western Philosophy in the 20th Century: A Festschrift Celebrating Professor Xia Jizong's 80th Birthday

Author: Pang Xuequan et al.
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2005-12-01
Features: We received over 30 papers this time. Considering factors such as length and relevance, this collection includes only 26 papers. It includes Mr. Xia’s own article, "An Overview of Modern Western Philosophy," which serves as the preface to his upcoming new work, "New Perspectives on Modern Western Philosophy." We have used it as the "Introduction" to this collection, and the subsequent papers are generally arranged based on the ideas presented in the Introduction, reflecting the two developmental threads of scientism and humanism, as well as later convergence and integration. Of course, this is only a broad generalization. For this reason, we have included some of the new concerns in contemporary Western philosophy of science and topics like political philosophy and cultural studies under the category of "convergence." Some of these papers are newly written, while others have already been published and generally reflect the current academic focus of the authors. As the editor-in-chief, our main task was to gather these papers according to Mr. Xia’s, aiming to give readers a comprehensive impression of modern Western philosophy and its development without making it appear disorganized. In line with the principle of "full responsibility for one’s own writing," we have only done as much technical work as possible, such as standardizing footnotes for references. As for whether the references appear in foreign language or Chinese translation, due to our limited level and energy, we did not insist on uniformity.
