Sun Moon Lake

Sun Moon Lake is located in Yuchi Township, Nantou County, Taiwan Province of the People's Republic of China. It lies roughly in the central area of Nantou County, nestled among the mountains between Yushan and Alishan, and is the largest natural freshwater lake in Taiwan Province.

Sun Moon Lake was formed by the accumulation of water in a faulted and sunken basin between Yushan and Alishan. Originally, it consisted of two separate lakes, but later, due to the need for hydroelectric power generation, a dam was built downstream, causing the water level to rise and the two lakes to merge into one. The lake now has a water area of 9.4 square kilometers, a shoreline of 36 kilometers, an average depth of 40 meters, and a maximum depth of 46 meters.

As early as the Qing Dynasty, Sun Moon Lake was selected as one of the Eight Great Sights of Taiwan, and it is known as "a separate wonderland beyond the seas." Within the scenic area, six theme parks have been planned according to its distinctive features, including landscape, nature, peacock and butterfly, waterfowl, and religious theme parks, as well as eight special scenic spots and two major service areas, Shuishe and Dehua.
