Author: (USA) Li Zhu
Publisher:
Publish Date: 2006-11-01
Features: This textbook is based on the author's lecture notes from teaching "Accelerator Physics" to graduate students at Indiana University and the lecture manuscripts for two courses taught at the American Institute of Particle Accelerators. Since the th edition was published in 1999, it has been widely used as a teaching material. The second edition, in addition to necessary revisions to the original book, includes a fifth chapter on Free Electron Lasers (FEL) and beam-beam interactions. Accelerator Physics is a highly integrated course that covers the physical principles and technological applications of charged particles moving in specially designed electromagnetic fields to form beams for specific purposes. The th chapter introduces the basic principles and development history of various types of accelerators; the second chapter discusses the transverse motion of cyclotrons and their physical treatment methods; the third chapter introduces the principles and design methods of synchrotron radiation accelerators and linear accelerators; the fourth chapter covers synchrotron radiation phenomena and the design principles of low-emittance electron storage rings. In the nal part of the book, the prospects for developing fourth-generation light sources are proposed. At the end of each section, special exercises are designed. To make solving them easier, the author intentionally divides the problems into many small parts. The problem-solving approaches and nal results not only help readers gain a deeper understanding of the basic principles but also enable them to directly enter related design fields.
