Features: A beautiful work filled with poetic imagination, worthy of becoming a classic in fantasy literature — Arthur Calder Marshall. The Listener This is a pure book of magic, blending Alan Garner's interests in archaeology, history, and folklore. The ruined church in the book is a boundary of human experience, similar to the rabbit hole leading to the wonderland and the wardrobe leading to the Narnia kingdom. — Roy Stokds, University of British Columbia
Young Roland is on an empty street when he is sent to another world by an old man playing a magic-like violin through the church door: Eldo, the former golden land. Eldo is now filled with deathly light, and darkness is spreading, losing its light. The old man playing the violin is the king of Eldo, who shouts at Roland: You must save the lost lands! You must bring light back to Eldo! Roland is stunned: How do you know I can do it? The king continues to shout: I just know, only you can defeat the demon of darkness.
A classic work by British fantasy author Alan Garner, winner of the 1965 British Carnegie Children's Literature Silver Medal.
