Author: Yang Limin et al.
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2004-09-01
Features: This book was originally compiled by Hu Wenzhong et al. from Beijing Foreign Studies College (now renamed Beijing Foreign Studies University) as a continuation of College English Volumes 1 and 2, intended for second-year undergraduate students of English majors in colleges and universities. Since its official publication in 1985, it has been reprinted more than 10 times, with a total print run exceeding 500,000 copies. Its long period of use has far exceeded the compilers' initial expectations. The compilers felt deeply uneasy about this, as the book was written in a rather hasty manner at the time, and there were numerous omissions and even obvious errors. To leave the book unchanged for a decade would be a disservice to those who used it. Therefore, the compilers have decided to make significant revisions, resulting in this new edition. The revision primarily follows the following four principles:
1. Maintain the original book's basic framework. The book remains a traditional intensive reading textbook, adhering to the core method of organizing language learning around texts. The content of each lesson is largely the same as the original, still divided into three main parts: text, exercises, and grammar. The accompanying poems are still provided for students' self-study and appreciation and do not require formal classroom discussion.
2. Strive to align the overall objectives, language items, vocabulary scope, and exercise methods of the textbook with the requirements of the Ministry of Education's syllabus. The aim is to basically fulfill the tasks of intensive reading as a course type.
3. Revitalize the textbook content to make it more vivid, diverse, and practical; enhance the planning and scientific rigor of the textbook, raise its overall quality, increase the amount of information, and better integrate language and culture. The above points are merely the compilers' subjective wishes. Given the compilers' limitations, various errors and shortcomings are still inevitable. Therefore, we sincerely hope that users of this book will not hesitate to provide constructive feedback. Additionally, the total number of exercises is relatively high, and teachers must select and use them based on their specific circumstances. This point also deserves the users' special attention. The original edition of this book was reviewed and edited by British expert Pat Adler and Canadian expert Sandra Sachs. The new edition has been fully reviewed and edited by Canadian expert Ruth Gamberg, with partial textual revisions by American expert Helen Young. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all of them.
