This Selected Works of Ancient Chinese Literature is a teaching material designed to accompany The History of Ancient Chinese Literature. The scope of this book covers works from the pre-Qin period to the late Qing Dynasty. For teaching purposes, in addition to ancient works, a small number of modern works have been selected. The book is divided into four volumes in chronological order: (1) Pre-Qin and Qin/Han, (2) Wei-Jin, Southern and Northern Dynasties, Sui, Tang, and Five Dynasties, (3) Song, Liao, Jin, and Yuan, (4) Ming and Qing. The arrangement of authors follows the chronological order of their eras, while the works are organized first by prose and poetry, followed by fiction and drama. The selected authors and works draw on the fine traditions of previous anthologies, with an emphasis on the representativeness of the authors and the temporal characteristics of the works to align with literary history teaching. The selection of works is designed to be concise and essential, tailored to actual teaching needs. Some lengthy popular works were excluded due to space constraints. The texts are generally based on widely accepted editions, with choices made for the better version in cases of textual variations. The annotations are kept brief and clear. During the compilation and annotation process, reference was made to other similar teaching materials and anthologies, yielding significant benefits. This book selects outstanding prose and poetry from 21 authors and 18 categories of works from the pre-Qin and Han periods, arranged in chronological order. Each work is accompanied by concise introductions and detailed annotations, clearly reflecting the developmental and main features of pre-Qin and Han literature. This book can be used as a teaching material for universities, accompanying the already published university liberal arts textbook The History of Ancient Chinese Literature (edited by Guo Yuheng).
