Tiantai Mountain has an average elevation of more than 500 meters, and its main peak, Huading Mountain, stands 1,098 meters above sea level. Its geology is mainly composed of granite. Relying on its natural landscape, the scenic area features Buddhist culture and integrates sightseeing, leisure vacations, and Buddhist pilgrimage. It has long been known for the reputation of "the cradle of Buddhism and Daoism, with divine landscapes and exquisite scenery," and possesses extremely high value for sightseeing and recreation, as well as historical, cultural, and scientific research value.
Historical Culture
Tiantai Mountain culture has lasted more than 1,800 years and has gone through a germination period (Eastern Han to Southern Liang), a formation period (Southern Chen to Five Dynasties), and a development period (Song Dynasty to the present). It germinated in the Wei and Jin dynasties and flourished in the Tang and Song dynasties. It is the birthplace of the Chinese Tiantai school of Buddhism and the Southern school of Daoism. The philosophical thought of the Tiantai school of Buddhism mainly consists of propositions such as "one thought contains three thousand worlds," "one mind observes three truths," "the three truths are perfectly fused," and "the doctrine of cessation and contemplation." The Southern school of Daoism was founded by Zhang Boduan at the foot of Zining Mountain in Tiantai, where in the eighth year of the Xining reign (1075) he completed the Wuzhen Pian and founded the school.
The Confucianism of Tiantai Mountain is mainly characterized by Neo-Confucianism. The Southern Song Neo-Confucian scholar Zhu Xi once served twice as abbot of Chongdao Temple in Taizhou, exerting a profound influence on Confucianism at Tiantai Mountain. Ancient literati had a high degree of cultural and emotional identification with Tiantai Mountain, and a large number of famous scholars and monks left more than 5,000 poems and over 1,000 articles here. The folk literature of Tiantai Mountain is also very developed, with tales such as Liu and Ruan Meeting Immortals and the legend of Jigong being widely known. Its culture is characterized by both regionality and trans-regionality, and by both contemporaneity and trans-temporality. Its core and basic elements spread to Zhejiang and even all parts of the country, as well as to Japan, Korea, Southeast Asia, and other places.
