Guo Moruo Complete Works (Archaeology Volume 4)

Author: Guo Moruo
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 2002-10-01
Features: Research on Bronze Inscriptions of the Yin and Zhou Dynasties is the earliest collection of Guo Moruo's essays on bronze inscriptions, published in 1931 as a lithographed manuscript by Da Dong Book Company. In 1954, the author made minor revisions and added appendices, which were then published by the People's Publishing House. In 1961, it was reprinted as Issue No. 7 of the Special Publication on Archaeology of the Institute of Archaeology, Chinese Academy of Sciences, by the Science Press. This book represents the preliminary achievements of the author's research on bronze inscriptions, containing many original insights and foresights. For example, his speculation on the form of the jie (a type of ancient weapon) has been confirmed by later archaeological discoveries. Compendium of Ancient Characters of the Shang and Zhou Dynasties is a reference book on ancient characters compiled by Guo Moruo. It was written in Chongqing in 1944 and was never published during the author's lifetime. In 1999, it was published as a facsimile edition by the Cultural Relics Publishing House. For this volume, we have included both Research on Bronze Inscriptions of the Yin and Zhou Dynasties and Compendium of Ancient Characters of the Shang and Zhou Dynasties. To preserve Guo's handwriting, occasional typographical errors or the rendering of certain ancient characters in the original book were left unchanged as the author did not correct them during his lifetime, and these have been retained in the facsimile edition.
