A Chronicle of Modern Chinese History (Complete 7 Volumes)

Author: Wei Hongyun, Editor-in-Chief
Publisher:
Publishing Date: 1999-05-01
Features: This book records history with the establishment of the Republic of China in 1912 as the upper limit and the founding of the People's Republic of China in 1949 as the lower limit, with upward and downward extensions as necessary for content. The chronology before the establishment of the Republic of China uses the Qing dynasty's era names with corresponding Gregorian dates appended. After the establishment of the Republic of China, the Gregorian calendar is used. The narrative follows the historical evolution of the Republic of China. For other regimes, the term "local regime" is used; for collaborationist regimes during the War of Resistance against Japan, the term "puppet regime" is used. The writing style of this book largely follows the traditional annalistic method, covering aspects such as politics, diplomacy, military affairs, legal systems, economy, culture, education, science and technology, arts, sports, and social life, with selective inclusion based on the significance of events. Detailed footnotes are provided at the end of the book to indicate the sources of the materials. Political terms and party designations in the cited materials are retained as they appear, and readers are advised to exercise discernment. The book strives for completeness in its accounts. Adhering to the principle of inclusiveness, when encountering differing views or historical materials, one perspective or source is generally adopted, or they are included in footnotes for reference and revision. The events are primarily arranged in chronological order. The names of individuals listed in the book are based on their birth names, with efforts to avoid using titles or courtesy names. However, in quoted passages, names are retained as they appear, and references to a person's position are based on the circumstances at the time. The book is substantial in scope and covers a wide range of topics. The chief editor, after thoroughly reviewing the entire volume, also fully respects the academic perspectives of the contributors to each section, in line with the principles of academic revision.
