X-ray Crystallography Basics - (Second Edition)

Author: Liang Dongcai

Publish Date: 2006-09-01
Features: This book is a culmination of the author's extensive research and teaching experience. It systematically analyzes and derives the principles of crystal symmetry and crystal diffraction using geometric concepts and methods, providing readers with a clear three-dimensional understanding, facilitating comprehension, mastery, and application. The book is divided into three parts: Fundamental Principles of Geometric Crystallography, Principles of Microspatial Symmetry, and Fundamental Principles of X-ray Diffraction in Crystals.
Part I and Part II apply the principle that the symmetric distribution of equivalent points in a general position equivalence point system in space is consistent with spatial symmetry to respectively delve into and analyze the macroscopic symmetry of crystals, microspatial symmetry, and the laws of symmetry combinations. They systematically derive 32 point groups and 230 microspatial symmetry combinations.
Part III, based on the relationship between the crystal lattice and its reciprocal lattice, uses the mathematical model of the reciprocal lattice and the reflecting sphere and their interaction to elaborate in detail the Laue scattering equation and the Bragg reflection equation. It also briefly describes the practical applications of several commonly used important single-crystal diffraction methods and instruments from a theoretical perspective.
Additionally, it explains the systematic extinction laws in diffraction based on the principle that the reciprocal lattice point system disappears due to translation vectors in the microspatial structure of the crystal. It derives 120 diffraction groups.
This book serves as a foundation for crystallography, crystal structure analysis, and protein crystallography, among other related fields. It can be used as a professional basic reading material for undergraduate and graduate students in relevant disciplines, as well as a reference for researchers engaged in related professional fields.
