Features: The articles selected in this book are research findings from the past decade or so, covering the theoretical foundations, design principles, and technologies used in HSK. In the late 1970s, modern language testing began to appear in China. The early tests introduced were foreign TOEFL, followed by China developing its own standardized English test—the English Proficiency Test (EPT). In the mid-1980s, we started designing and developing the Chinese Proficiency Test (HSK). HSK has gone through more than 20 years of and is arguably the longest-standing standardized test in Chinese history. By 2005, the number of HSK test-takers had reached 250,000 (with half of them being ethnic minority candidates in China), indicating that HSK had become a large-scale standardized test. At this time, we compiled this book, which can also be seen as a for HSK.
