What causes balanitis?

Patient's question:

The condition is quite severe. Could you please tell me what causes balanitis?

Doctor's answer:

Hello, balanoposthitis refers to the inflammation of the inner foreskin and glans penis. A lipoidal substance secreted normally in the foreskin cavity can accumulate as smegma in cases of phimosis or excessive foreskin, irritating the foreskin and glans to cause balanoposthitis. It is often caused by friction from underwear, psychological trauma, or local irritation from soap and detergents.
Hello, balanoposthitis can be treated with immersion in a 1/5000 potassium permanganate solution and application of an anti-inflammatory ointment. Allergic balanoposthitis requires oral antihistamines and topical corticosteroid ointments. If phimosis or foreskin edema prevents movement or drainage, and inflammation does not subside with standard treatment, a preputial dorsal slit procedure may be performed.
