Features: Qitian is my neighbor and the same age as me. At first, we weren’t very familiar, but later we became classmates and also good friends. I got to know her better over time. She is honest, hardworking, kind, and forgiving. Last summer vacation, to improve my English skills, Qitian and I signed up for an English tutoring class. Once, the teacher asked us to memorize a long and confusing English passage. When I got home, I was in a dilemma. Sitting on the bed, I looked at the English book and thought, “Oh my god, it has over eighty sentences—how could I possibly memorize it?” I felt worried. Then I had an idea: “Wait, how did I forget? Qitian is my lab partner. There are over sixty students in the class, and the teacher won’t check each one individually. They’ll just have lab partners check each other. If someone hasn’t memorized it, they’ll tell the teacher. Qitian and I are good friends. If I just ask her not to report me to the teacher, it’ll be fine. Haha!” I tossed the book aside and happily started playing on the computer, occasionally “praising myself” in my mind for thinking up such a clever solution.
The next day, the teacher indeed asked lab partners to check each other. Qitian fluently and accurately recited the English passage. When it was my turn, I stammered through the sentences. Since I hadn’t memorized it at all, I couldn’t continue after the second sentence. So I mustered up my courage and whispered to Qitian, “I haven’t memorized it, so don’t tell the teacher.” After saying that, I even winked at her. But her face instantly darkened, and she said sternly, “How could you do that?” Before I could respond, she went straight to the teacher and said, “Teacher, Gaopeng hasn’t memorized the passage!” Hearing this, I was furious. The teacher criticized me in front of the whole class, not only demanding that I memorize the passage at home but also punishing me by copying it. I was so angry that I thought, “I’ll never talk to Qitian again.” On the way home, I didn’t say a single word to her.
The next day, just as I was about to go to English class, I pushed open the door and found a letter on the ground. “Who wrote this?” I wondered as I opened the envelope. Inside was a short note written in elegant handwriting: “Gaopeng, are you still angry with me? As your friend, how could I possibly help you cheat the teacher and yourself? We’re still friends, right?” After reading the note, I ran downstairs quickly. Qitian was standing smiling at the bottom of my stairs, waiting for me to go to class with her.
